THE SMARTEST THING YOU CAN DO THIS WINTER HINT: IT STARTS WITH YOUR FEET!

4. Exercise regularly

If you’re 65 or older, the biggest threat to your health right now isn’t hypothermia or even the flu — it’s slipping and falling. According to the National Council on Aging, more than one in four American seniors falls every single year, and these falls are the No. 1 cause of injuries and deaths in that age group. We’re not trying to scare you, but your fall risk is more significant than you think. The smartest thing you can do this winter is take these five steps to protect yourself from the pain and expense of an injury. 1. Invest in non-skid, rubber- soled, low-heeled shoes or lace-up shoes with non-skid soles that fully support your feet. It’s essential to have the proper footwear, even indoors! Instead of smooth-soled house slippers or socks, choose

slippers with good traction to prevent falls on slippery floors. 2. Use an assistive device like a cane or walker if you need it. There’s no shame in using a walker or a cane, especially when it could save your life! Just make sure the device you buy is the right size and its wheels roll smoothly. If you’re having problems with your device or aren’t sure whether you need one, our team can help you find out. 3. Ask your doctor about your medication if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. If you feel sleepy, dizzy, or lightheaded, you’re more likely to fall and hurt yourself. Bring up these worrying side effects with your doctor. They may be able to switch your medication.
