2021 Senior Lawrentian

It is always a fiercely contested battle to win, and despite not taking first place, our performance of ‘ Johnny B Goode ’ will live long in the memory. Well done to band members Ben Cox, Christian Francis, Sam Le Baigue and Tom Choi. Unfortunately, 2020-21 was my last year as Housemaster of Newlands. I have taken the opportunity to move into Towerwithmy family toserveas aBoardingHousemaster. To be honest, I didn’t expect to leave Newlands this soon, having been a part of the community for three years and Housemaster for two. However, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to commit more to the school by moving in, and bringing my own children to the Junior School. As some of you are aware, I am originally from Thanet and I feel a strong connection to the boys of Newlands. Clearly, I felt privileged to serve as their Housemaster. However, I know that Mr Stevens will do all that he can to help Newlands continue to grow. Having worked closely with him in recent years and seeing the rapport he has with the boys, I have every confidence that Newlands will go from strength to strength under his leadership. I am nervous about the first time I am on the receiving end of a ‘ Neeewlaaaands ’ chant! It will be a bittersweet moment. Lastly, I would like to reiterate my sincere gratitude to the pupils, parents and staff who made Newlands so successful in 2020. The future remains uncertain but, as C.S. Lewis remarked, ‘it is so likely children will meet enemies, let them least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage’. I am sure Newlands will continue to embrace the adventurous spirit with which it is so strongly associated and I wish the pupils the very best.  Mr Gunn, Newlands Housemaster
