Design Technology

S tudents of Design Technology have worked with impressive perseverance this year, endeavouring to design and make exciting finished products, no matter the circumstances. Staff and pupils alike were thrilled to get back into the workshops and a range of practical projects were

first STEM project in Design Technology, learning about hydroponics and adding to their joinery skills as they made wall mountable plant holders. Students in the Third Form worked in collaborative teams to design and make prototypes to meet this year’s Design Museum competition, Design Ventura. Sadly their projects were cut short due to the school moving online in January. However, versatile and intrepid, they quickly switched their attention to designing board game mash-ups, practising graphic design skills to create new ideas based on their favourite board games, books and films. Pupils in the Fourth Form spent the first term researching and developing ideas for Design for Life - The Contemporary Home project. They were tasked to design prototypes to be either flat-packable, multi-functional or collapsible, meeting the needs of those living in ever more confined city spaces and to address issues relating to sustainability. targets set at the start of the year. We were so sorry that they didn’t get the chance to make the pieces that they had worked so hard to research and design, but we absolutely take our hats off to the students for their determination. The finished projects were impressive, showing genuine innovation, fluent thinking and dedication. I’m not sure that a year group has ever worked harder! Both Mrs Griffiths and I were thrilled and impressed with our students’ efforts and outcomes, the resilience and genuine love of learning that they showed. We all learned a great deal in the time at home, about Design Technology and about ourselves. We are also sorry to say farewell to those who are moving on and we wish all of our students, past and present the very best of luck with the next stage in their learning. 
