Science

D espite a challenging year, we tried hard to keep the interest going in science and to offer some enriching activities even during the lockdown. In Michaelmas Term, many students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd Form took part in the science competition, organised by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford. They had to write a 500-word essay titled: “Why I love science”. We had some lovely essays written and our students received certificates. During the lockdown, in January, year 12 physicists managed to take part in a virtual live presentation. This was an engineering event and proved to be quite a success apart from the initial technical connectivity issues. The speakers were amazing and inspiring. This is what some students said: “I really enjoyed that presentation. I had already thought about engineering but now I am even more motivated to pursue that path. I think the most interesting part of that talk was the idea of growing the computer chips, and the idea that quantum physics being so close to being part of everyday life. I discovered more engineering paths that I didn’t know existed which will help me expand on what path I want to follow.” Jonathan Adams “I think the event today was really interesting and useful. Now I have a more general idea of what engineering is, and what I like or dislike. Even though it is really late in Hong Kong, I still managed to stay up and listen

because I thought their presentations were helpful. They shared and told us about their experiences or dreams when they were our age and gave us suggestions and ideas about what we should do now, and also gave us different materials to prepare for our courses, such us books (e.g. Why buildings fall down, Don’t be evil), and podcasts. I am really glad that we participated in this event.” Fei Fei Chan “The event gave a good insight into engineering and its different applications both in the present and in the future.

Additionally, each of the panellists who spoke gave a great lecture about their chosen subject and field of expertise.” James Lund “The talk was very interesting. I liked the way everything was presented, and the lecturers gave me a whole new understanding about physics. I am very thankful for their preparations. I am especially interested in engineering right now because it sounds exciting.” Tsz Ching Ling
