2021 Senior Lawrentian

STEM Day F ollowing a year of minimal practical activities, the Science Department, with the help of volunteers from Lower Sixth decided to host a STEM day for the First Form. On a warm but very rainy Friday in June, the students gathered in the CPC to take part in a range of fun and educational activities. Water rockets: students investigated if the height a water rocket reaches depends on the amount of water in the rocket. Getting wet was inevitable even if the rain had not helped. Mad materials: students experienced non- Newtonian fluids – those that will turn into a solid if hit, but will flow like a liquid when no force is applied (or vice versa). They then experimented to create the highest bouncing bouncy ball. Spaghetti towers: understanding stable structures and shapes was the aim of this activity, through the spaghetti tower challenge to build the tallest tower of dried spaghetti and marshmallows that could support a Kinder egg on the top. Eye dissection: this was a highlight for some, and took place thanks to Mrs Cupido, who stepped in to help after her L6 beach trip was cancelled, due to the weather. Supertasting: this activity looked at how we tasteour food. Students determinedwhether they were non-tasters, supertasters or something in between through blindfolded tastings, counting taste buds and testing the sweetness of different sugars.
