ED PEGDEN
Ed arrived in January 2013 to teach Chemistry, having been appointed during the previous term by Rev. CWM Aitken. He grew up in Deal and went to Walmer Secondary School, after which he had an apprenticeship at Pfizer, leading to a degree and eventually into teaching through training at Ashford School. He joined St Lawrence College having left Wilmington Grammar School for Girls. Ed quickly made an impact on our College. He became Ellis Gill’s apprentice, taking on the Chemical Magic Show, and then rose to the rank of Head of Chemistry. He subsequently became a Deputy Housemaster in Kirby and for the last few years has been Housemaster of Tower. During his time here it has been noted that he works at a million miles an hour, usually being first to complete a task. He enjoys jesting with pupils, particularly the boys in Tower. His speciality is catching them out when they have committed minor crimes and then giving them a silly forfeit. He loves a phone call and he is always tired, having been found occasionally to take a midday nap on a sofa in the Tower TV Room. We bid a fond farewell to Ed and his family, Lorraine, Ben, Arthur and Baxter the dog, wishing them all well at Kellett School in Hong Kong, where Ed will be a Housemaster to 150 Day Pupils and Lorraine will be the HR Manager. Of course the last words go to the boys of Tower; “He’s eccentric, funny… very weird”, “Loveable”, “Bright… and warm”.
Vikki Langman joined the College in 2015 as a Physics teacher. She studied Physics at Magdalen College, Oxford, is a mother of three and prior to teaching she worked as a technician at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. She was a technical PR and corporate communications magazine editor and a scientific officer at the Atomic Weapons Establishment. In her time here Vikki has made an invaluable difference in the department with her outstanding lessons, infectious energy, and enthusiasm for the subject. She has worked hard to help all her students succeed and has gone far and beyond as a teacher. Vikki has organized many extra-curricular activities including trips to CERN, Dungeness and the Herstmonceux observatory and the more recent and very successful First Form STEM day. Vikki has been an excellent Sixth Form tutor who took great care of her tutees and offered guidance and support throughout (especially with UCAS applications and references- great writer!). Vikki is one of those individuals who has a natural flair for teaching but also her professionalism, integrity and humility at the same time were second to none. She will be greatly missed and difficult to replace. Vikki and her family are moving to another part of England, to buy same land, raise sheep and live in nature. We wish her all the best for the future. VIKKI LANGMAN
HOLLY SHELDON
Holly Sheldon has served as a teacher of Geography for two years, having joined the College in September 2019. The department owes her a great deal, given the incredible work she has done for the subject over the course of her tenure. Holly has been particularly active in shepherding the geography GCSE students through their courses, alongside teaching human geography at A level. Her subject knowledge and the ability she has to enthuse young minds towards studying geography have helped to further the development of the department. At the core of her teaching there has always been a great deal of care placed on each individual pupil. She will be sorely missed for this reason, by both pupils and staff. A hugely affable presence within the common room, it is a great relief to know that she will still be connected to the College in the future through her continued support of the CCF. As she moves to The Charles Dickens School in September, we would like to wish her the very best in this next phase of her career.
