systems for all the hats you have to wear until you can pass them off to other employees at your business.

Think of McDonald’s. They definitely don’t have the best burgers in the world, but that franchise is incredibly successful because it’s incredibly consistent . You know exactly what you’re in for at any McDonald’s in the world, largely thanks to their systems. I’ve been on a quest to build systems since reading Gerber’s book. I’ve hired business coaches to help me create systems, and even after a period of years, I still find tasks and processes at REIBLAW that I don’t yet have a system for. A crucial element of systemizing your business, according to Gerber’s book, is finding time to work on your business without working in it. When you’re just going through the daily motions, making sure your business stays afloat, it’s like tossing water out of a leaky ship with a bucket without actually plugging the holes. When you set time aside to look at your business from 30,000 feet, you’re able to work toward the ultimate goal of any business owner — to create a business you could sell, even if you’re planning to hang on to it for years to come.

THE BOOK THAT HELPED REIBLAW BECOME WHAT IT IS TODAY HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK?

When you strike out to start up your own business, just knowing your profession, whether that’s mechanics, law, sandwich making, or something else, becomes half the battle toward being successful. Then, on top of knowing your profession really well, you also have to take on all the responsibilities of marketing your business, managing your finances, and doing about a million other things you didn’t have to do when you were working for someone else. You could honestly write a whole how-to book on the subject — but luckily, you don’t have to. Nov. 7 is National Book Lover’s Day — a day to celebrate reading in general, along with the best books we’ve read in the past. For me, one of the most influential books was “The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber. It’s the book that got me thinking about practicing law in different ways than most lawyers do. Most lawyers think of themselves as professionals only, whether they run their own practice or not. What Gerber’s book makes clear is that in order to be a successful business owner, you can’t just think of yourself as a professional anymore. You have to be a marketer, a systems organizer, an HR manager, and so much more. Thinking back on “The E-Myth Revisited,” a few points that Gerber made stood out to me in particular. The first was that even if you’re not trying to franchise your business, you should run your business like it’s a franchise. What Gerber meant was that you should relentlessly build

“The E-Myth Revisited" really changed my perspective on how to successfully run a business. Without understanding the importance of systems, I have no doubt that REIBLAW would not be where it is today. Gone are the days of constantly needing to scan important documents. Like every business, I had to severely limit my contact with clients, which made getting their signed documents and scanning them a huge hassle. of your assets. Instead, they pass directly to beneficiaries by means of a separate legal document called a beneficiary designation. Make sure to review who the beneficiaries of these assets are when planning your will. DON’T RUSH YOUR SEARCH FOR A LEGAL GUARDIAN A key element of any will for parents with young children is designating someone as their children’s legal guardian. As any parent can probably intuit, this is not a decision to be made lightly. Consider all the ways in which a proper guardian could ensure your child’s well-being, and choose the guardian who can give them the best path forward in life. Lots of people put off creating their last will and testament — and understandably so. The process reminds us of our own mortality, and because there are several factors to consider, doing it right can take time. So, to get you started on the right track, here are a few key considerations for creating a will. TAKE ACCOUNT OF ALL YOUR ASSETS Your assets are more than just your house, cars, business, and savings accounts. In this day and age, you might not consider several items “assets” in the traditional sense, but they are nonetheless legally considered so. These include digital and biological assets, such as domain names, social media accounts that generate money, and even frozen embryos. REMEMBER TO CONSIDER JOINT PROPERTY If you own an asset jointly with a spouse or a business partner, these assets fall outside your will. Upon your death, the asset will pass directly to the surviving owner, bypassing any instructions that say otherwise in your final wishes. INGREDIENTS

• 1 tbsp kosher salt • 1/4 tsp ground cloves • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed • 4 (2-inch) cinnamon sticks

• 4 lbs orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, peeled and cut

crosswise into 2-inch pieces, then cut lengthwise into 1-inch wedges • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.

2. Place sweet potato wedges in a 4-quart baking dish.

3. Sprinkle sugar, salt, and cloves over sweet potatoes.

4. Dot with butter and place cinnamon sticks around sweet potatoes.

5. Bake, turning every 15 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender and the liquid is syrupy, about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

6. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes.

7. Discard cinnamon sticks and serve.

WHY VETERANS DAY AND THE NUMBER 11 GO HAND IN HAND Veterans Day comes every Nov. 11. It’s a national holiday that recognizes veterans who served in the United States Armed

The change was made in order to recognize all veterans who had honorably served their country. By 1954, the U.S. had fought in more wars — specifically World War II and the Korean War — and hundreds of thousands more Americans had served. Unsurprisingly, there was some political drama surrounding the day. In 1968, Congress made Veterans Day a federal holiday under the Uniform Holiday Bill. The idea was to increase the number of three-day weekends in the year. Veterans Day became a holiday that would fall on the fourth Monday of October, a far cry from Nov. 11.

Forces and honors those both living and deceased. Historically, the day marks Armistice Day and the end of the Great War: World War I. But what is the significance of the number 11?

The armistice was signed at 5:45 a.m. in France, but it took effect at 11 a.m. that same morning — which happened to be Nov. 11, 1918. The armistice originally lasted 36 days but was extended month after month. This led to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, when peace was officially declared. Later that year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11 would be known as Armistice Day to honor those who fought in the Great War. This lasted until 1954, when President Dwight Eisenhower signed a proclamation turning Armistice Day into Veterans Day.

However, in 1978, Veterans Day was restored to its original Nov. 11 date. But why?

The answer is simple. It’s a number that sticks with you. When the clock strikes 11:11, you always take notice. By that same notion, we all remember the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Because of this, we’ll never forget the end of the Great War, nor will we forget those who served.
