The Thing About Bayside HERE’S TO BAYSIDE

In this newsletter, I’ve talked a lot about the parts of my life I appreciate. My family, my team, my patients, my work — I have a lot to be thankful for! But this time around I wanted to show some love for the place where all these elements come together: Bayside Queens. There’s a lot to love about this neighborhood, as a business owner and a father.

Of course, my kids don’t bike as much as I did at their age, but I think that’s more a generational issue than a geographic one. But where Bayside has Middle Village beat is, well, the bay. Whether you enjoy fishing, sailing or just watching the boats come and go, this neighborhood place has fun for everyone.

We really get the best of both worlds here in Bayside. Manhattan is just a train ride away, yet we don’t have to deal with the congestion and crowds most people associate with the city. Like Long Island, we actually have driveways to park in and yards for our kids to play in — but we still get all the benefits New York City has to offer, including late-night stores and amazing shows and festivals. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start my clinic. When it comes to physical therapy, convenience is key. When you’re in pain, you don’t want to go far to find relief — especially when walking proves difficult. The Bay Terrace shopping center we call home is exactly what our patients

Needless to say, this has been a great place to raise our family. In the past decade we’ve called Bayside home, our boys have had an amazingly well- rounded upbringing. They’ve learned to appreciate nature out in Upstate NY, experienced the excitement of the city, and have grown up in a richly diverse part of the country. Coming to appreciate the innumerable cultures and nationalities that make up Queens gives them a perspective not enough kids get. We also have the full spectrum from families with small children to seniors with grandkids. I’m glad my boys see people of all different backgrounds and beliefs working together every day in Bayside.

need. Unlike most places in this city, it’s easy to get to and has parking. In most other parts of New York, these luxuries would be unheard of! This is a very special slice of Queens. I say that as someone who grew up over in Middle Village. In a lot of ways, Bayside reminds me of my childhood surroundings: plenty of parks, friendly neighborhood shops, and safe streets. It’s the kind of neighborhood your kids can bike through to go to school or visit friends.

So, whether I’m driving to work, taking the family out for a burger at Bare Burger Grill, or just taking in the view of the bay, I’ll always be grateful for this community. I’m proud to call Bayside home, and I hope you are, too. It’s the people who make any place worth living in — our patients remind us of that every single day.

AND GIVE HONEY A SECOND THOUGHT

The health benefits of raw organic honey, which include soothing sore throats, lowering cholesterol, and treating skin wounds, have been embraced by many members of the holistic health community for decades. But with the rapid decline of the bee population in recent years, humans’ use of honey has become more controversial.

approximately 30% of the world’s crops won’t flourish. Fortunately, you can help strengthen the bee population in a few ways from your own home.

First, try to avoid purchasing any commercialized honey products of questionable quality and provenance. Instead, look for raw local honey at a farmer’s market. That way, you can meet the beekeeper to determine if their honey-rendering practices are sustainable. Then, by purchasing their product, you are helping fund their hive and enrich the local bee population. You can also plant a garden full of bee-friendly plants, like honeysuckle, strawberries, sunflowers, and cosmos, to give the bees in your community more pollen sources. Additionally, if you notice dandelions growing in your garden, leave them. They are a great food source for bees, especially in early spring before other plants have started blooming. While honey has many excellent health properties, bees are far more vital to the world’s sustainability. Do your part to help their population by researching, spreading awareness, and thinking before you shop for honey.

According to the New York Bee Sanctuary, bees (not just honey-makers) are disappearing for several reasons, but one of the most unfortunate contributors is the honey industry. In order to mass-produce commercial honey products, many factories have resorted to industrialized beekeeping practices, which have been deemed unethical by animal activist groups because they strip hives of their honey storage, starving the bees through the winter months. This practice, along with soil contamination and a viral infection spread by mites, led to the devastating loss of 40% of all bee colonies last year.

Because most bees are pollinators, they play a crucial role in helping plants reproduce. Without the bees playing their part in this natural process,

“Josh and Jenove were the ultimate pros ...”

“I feel 100% better. I can walk straight with limited bending. I had both back surgery (spinal fusion) and a hip replacement within six months of each other. There was a lot of therapy that needed to be done. I now walk without a limp, and my flexibility in both my back and hip are perfectly normal.

“My experience was outstanding on both the physical and occupational parts of my therapy. Josh and Jenove were the ultimate pros and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly.”

Sudoku Train Your Brain With

Much of our focus here at the clinic is to get our patients up and moving about. After all, being too sedentary can make mild aches and pains much worse and can start to affect your balance. But you can’t be on the move 24/7, right? Sometimes keeping your body healthy has less to do A Guide to More Comfortable Sitting SI TS WELL WI TH US Despite being defined as “the study of people’s efficiency in their working environment,” most people think of posture when they hear the word ergonomics. That’s because so much of work-life in this day and age revolves around sitting, making ergonomic chairs a must for preventing back pain in the office. However, even if you’re enjoying your retirement, there’s something we can all take away from this field of study — good sitting posture can help prevent pain. THE RIGHT WAY TO SIT When sitting, you don’t want your lower spine to be arched nor slouched. Instead, find a comfortable middle ground. Sometimes placing a small but firm pillow between your back and the back of the chair can help achieve this. But avoiding back pain from sitting down involves more than just your back. You’ll also want to keep both feet firmly planted on the ground and shoulder blades against the backrest. When you go to stand, slide yourself to the end of the chair and then straighten your legs. This is far better than lunging forward to get out of a chair. DRIVE AWAY BACK PAIN Another place where people often sit for far too long is in the driver’s seat, especially in New York traffic. Being behind the wheel can be a major pain in the back, so it’s important to pay attention to your posture there as well. The same pillow trick can work in your car seat, and much like any chair, you want your upper back to be pressed comfortably against the backrest. You’ll want your knees to be slightly above your hips while at rest, so adjust your seat to achieve this while still keeping the pedals within reach. with whether you sit and more to do with how you sit. The Free Radical 411 How to Minimize Age-Inducing Atoms

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to entirely avoid free radicals and the havoc they wreak. The process that forms free radicals, called oxidative stress, can be kick-started by a variety of different substances found in food, water, medicine, and even the air we breathe, according to the Huntington’s Outreach Project for Education at Stanford University. Unsurprisingly, these substances are things already considered unhealthy, like alcohol, exposure to X-rays, ozone, fried food, chemical pesticides, air pollutants, and tobacco smoke. That said, there is one molecule that is stable enough to stand up to and reduce free radicals: the antioxidant. According to a study published by Pharmacognosy Reviews, antioxidants can “donate an electron to a rampaging free radical and neutralize it, thus reducing its ability to damage.” Synthetic antioxidants exist but can sometimes have harmful side effects, so scientists advise protecting yourself by avoiding free radical triggers like alcohol, processed foods, and red meat, and ingesting natural antioxidants in the form of berries, stone fruits, olives, onions, garlic, and green and black teas. Herbs and spices like cinnamon, basil, turmeric, and fenugreek can ratchet up your antioxidant levels too. While it can’t guarantee immortality, the right diet can certainly help you stave off aging and disease, so why not start today?

If you’ve ever picked up a health magazine while waiting at the doctor’s office, then you’re probably familiar with the term “free radicals” — at least enough to know that they get a bad rap from doctors and beauticians alike. But what are they, exactly? According to Live Science, free radicals are atoms with unpaired electrons that have split off from oxygen molecules in the body and started to “scavenge” for other electrons to pair with. That wouldn’t be problematic, except that these atoms tend to damage cells, lipids, proteins, and even DNA along the way, and that destruction has serious consequences. As Live Science puts it, “Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many others. They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage.”
