RESEARCH at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology
Bringing the most advanced techniques of genomic research to plants and agriculture Crop improvement HudsonAlpha scientists use genomics to study plant DNA and identify the specific genes responsible for desirable traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, and higher yields. Food security Our ever-changing environment, growing world population, and emerging plant pests and diseases threaten food production worldwide. At HudsonAlpha, scientists use genomics to tackle food insecurity by creating more productive, nutritious food crops. Bioproducts HudsonAlpha scientists aim to be stewards of sustain- ability, using genomics to create more efficient crops and bring sustainable practices and products to market. They develop genomic tools to study and improve promising candidates for bioenergy and bioproducts, like perennial grasses and industrial hemp.

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Since opening in 2008, HudsonAlpha has been uniquely poised to accelerate scientific discoveries and translate them into real-world solutions. Our scientists apply the power of genomics to make breakthroughs in human health and agriculture, addressing glob- al problems such as food insecurity, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and climate change. Our educators are creating a more genomic-literate society and raising the next generation of the STEM workforce, while our economic development team is fueling entrepreneurship and creativity in biotechnology. The Institute has been a catalyst for progress, discovery, and inno- vation in its first 15 years, and we have the capability to do so much more. Philanthropy helps speed discoveries in our research pro- grams and inspire and educate the STEM workforce of tomorrow. Discovery is the key to a brighter future, and with your help, we can continue to unlock the secrets of DNA to make our world a healthi- er and more sustainable place. For more information on how to support HudsonAlpha’s mission, email foundation . hudsonalpha.org and a member of the Advancement team will be glad to help you. Your philanthropic support can make a difference that will last for generations to come. Please visit the HudsonAlpha Foundation website to learn how you can make a gift.

Fostering the success of the biotech industry
HudsonAlpha’s Huntsville biotech campus strengthens and diversifies Alabama’s economy by supporting the success of life sciences compa- nies. The 152-acre campus within Cummings Research Park supports more than 45 businesses focused on diagnostics, medical devices, drug and therapeutic development and other biotech innovations.
HudsonAlpha’s expert scientists, geneticists, and bioinforma- ticians use genomics to improve life, whether that be the diag- nosis, treatment, and prevention of human disease or improve- ments to plants that provide us with nutritious food, sustainable fuel and fiber sources, and a healthy environment. Scientists at HudsonAlpha are some of the best in the world at sequenc- ing, analyzing, and interpreting organismal genomes, having sequenced more than 200 novel plant reference genomes and tens of thousands of human genomes. Neurological and psychiatric disorders HudsonAlpha scientists sequence and analyze genomic information to pinpoint genes and genetic factors responsible for neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, leading to breakthroughs in risk identification, diagnosis, and treatment. Rare and undiagnosed disease HudsonAlpha scientists analyze the entire genome of people suffering from undiagnosed diseases to find gene changes that might explain their symptoms, affording diagnoses to hundreds of individuals. Cancer
DNA contains the genetic code of all living things. The study of genomics helps us understand the basis of life, health, disease and biodiversity. HudsonAlpha is inspiring the next generation of scientists through educational programs classroom tools and digital learning opportunities. HudsonAlpha education programs are helping build a STEM workforce of tomorrow and a genomic-literate society.
