St Mark‘s Church: both St Mark and Nikola Tesla The race starts in front of St. Mark’s Church, a Serbian Orthodox church that was built between 1931 and 1940 in the immediate vicinity of an older church, which dates back to 1835 and is modelled on Gračani- ca Monastery. This house of worship, representing one of the Serbian cap- ital’s most beautiful temples, houses a sarcophagus containing the mor- tal remains of Emperor Dušan. The church’s crypt also marks the burial spot of the last king of the Obreno- vić dynasty, Aleksandar Obrenović, and his wife Draga Mašin. During the second kilometre of the race, you’ll pass the monument to Nikola Tesla that stands in front of the building of the Belgrade Uni- versity Faculty of Electrical Engineer- ing, and just a few metres further along is the monument to language reformer Vuk Karadžić, the man who devised the modern Serbian script.
