Pointers on the Lesson “ Trust is an absolute and unquestion ing resting on that which is its object.” Such is a definition to be found in Web ster’s Collegiate dictionary. Other words that mean the same thing are confi dence, reliance and assurance. The Psalms before us for this week’s study emphasize different phases of the mat ter of trust. Reasons for Trust Psa. 34:3-8 There are different ways o f consid ering this portion of Scripture, but surely one way is to note the reasons why God deserves ter be trusted. (1) He hears prayer, v. 4; (2) He delivers from fear, v. 4; (3) He gives radiance to the life, v. 5; (4) He saves the soul from trouble, v. 6; and (5) He provides pro tection, v.7. A God who can and will do all of these things deserves the fullest confidence. Privileges of the Believer Psa. 37:3-6 The privileges that belong to the child of God are indicated by the verbs which are used in this section: “ Trust in the Lord,” “ do good,” v. 3; “delight thyself,” v. 4; “ Committ thy way,” v. 5; “ rest in the Lord,” v. 7. Those who heed these exhortations are promised wonder ful blessings. Note what they are: they shall dwell in the place o f blessing, v. 3; they shall be provided with daily bread, v. 3; they shall have the desires o f their hearts, v. 4; their way shall be pros perous, v. 5; and they shall find their character upheld beyond suspicion, v. 6. Who would want to trust any other God? The Challenge to Confidence Psa. 46:1-3 Luther’s famous Reformation hymn, “ A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” was based on this psalm. It is a psalm that inspires confidence. The reason for this is easily seen when its matchless words are considered. God is the soul’s resting place and in Him there is perfect pro tection even though the earth be stirred into convulsions, and everything visible

be rent asunder. Let us possess the same spirit that dwelt in Luther who, the darker the hour, the more fully he trusted in God. Truly, He is the “ present help” every one of us needs. With trust re posed in Him there is absolutely nothing to fear. He is sufficient for every ex perience and emergency.

Helps for the Children. Trusting in God Psa. 37 :3-6; 138:3-7; 143:8

Memory Verse: “Trust in the Lord, and do good . . . Delight thyself also in the Lord” (Psa. 37:3,4). God’s people who lived in Bible times had many hardships and many experi ences that might have made them doubt God’s love and care. Many of the verses in the Psalms tell of the trust that these people had in their God to be their Helper at all times. Because they loved Him, they knew that they could absolutely count upon His help, no matter what might happen in their lives. Psalm 37 tells three things that God’s children must do if they want His constant care: they must trust in Him and do good; they must delight in Him; and they must commit their way unto Him [or roll their way upon Him and let Him worry about it]. Look at the wonderful blessings that are promised to those who do these three things! David tells how the Lord cared for him in Psalm 138:3: “ In the day when I cried thou answered me.” Again David prayed, “ Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk” (Psa. 143:8b). Perhaps you would like to memorize some of these verses, just as the chilj dren in Bible times memorized them long ago. Then the Holy Spirit can bring them to your mind when Satan tempts you to doubt God’s love and care. The praise verses will express your thanks to your Lord when you realize the precious things that are yours be cause you belong to Him.
