On setting season two in Sicily… “I don’t speak Italian, but I do speak a little French and initially wanted to do season two in France, because I thought it would be fun to be able to communicate with the crew [Laughs]. We saw a lot of properties in France and Italy. Many of them were small and wouldn’t photograph very well. But when we went to the San Domenico in Taormina, Sicily, there was just something about it. From there, you can see classic Italian vil- las dotting the coastline; the Greek theatre; the mountains are behind you; and the Ionian Sea is in front of you. I thought, ‘If you’re going to Eu- rope, this is the view that you want.’ And the hotel is also a converted con- vent – it had a real vibe. There was rich, dramatic potential that got me very excited.” On using local lore as artis- tic inspiration… “There are these ceramic ‘Teste di Moro’ heads everywhere in Sicily (“head of the Moor”). The White Lotus fol- lows various hotel guests over the course of a week , with each day revealing an ever-dark- er side of the perfect holidaymakers, hotel staff and the idyllic place itself. The story this time unfolds in the set- ting of Sicily, where the White Lotus welcomes two couples who are try- ing to decide whether they’re friends or cordial enemies, three generations of an Italian-American family who are exploring their Sicilian roots, a VIP guest (Emmy-winner Jennifer Coolidge) travelling with her hus- band (and personal assistant). Be- hind the scenes, a professional but
rageful hotel manager tries to keep two young locals out of his luxuri- ous building, both of whom – each in their own way – want to climb the social ladder. Season two of this award-win- ning HBO series is being broadcast on the HBO Max streaming platform and the HBO channel. Here series author Mike White, who has gone from writing underappreciated clas- sics to creating this dark satire that’s become a hit, discusses some of the most interesting happenings during shooting and the actual process of creating this second season of The White Lotus.
