a few times a year. “Miroslav's Gos- pel was proclaimed in 2005 and in- scribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, which is confir- mation of its importance, but also obliges us to preserve it for the bene- fit of humankind,” says National Mu- seum PR Marija Jovičić. Ethnographic Museum The logical route of every tourist is to walk from Republic Square along Knez Mihailova Street towards Kale- megdan, which represents another hub of the life of the capital. Howev- er, if you descend just one street fur- ther down, towards Dorćol, you will come across the Ethnographic Mu- seum. The building on the corner, at 13 Students’ Square and 2 Uzun Mirkova Street, was not purpose built (in 1933/34) to house this museum, but rather as the seat of the Belgrade Stock Exchange. The building, which was declared a cultural monument in 1984, is characterised by its modern- ist concept, while the high columns at the entrance adopted influences of German architecture. The fund of the Ethnographic Museum preserves artefacts of traditional folk culture. These objects, which include every- day items, costumes, books, photo- graphs and works of fine art, serve to illustrate social relations, family life, customs, beliefs, knowledge and the national creativity of Serbs and oth- er peoples on the territory of Serbia. The most interesting elements for outsiders to see relate to the ways our ancestors celebrated Christmas, Easter and family saints’ day celebra- tions, as well as how the people gath- ered in front of churches and monas- teries on various occasions. The current exhibition, which runs until mid-December, is called A Beautiful House and is on display in the Gallery of the Museum. “By building houses that would outlive them, the owners weaved the narra- tive of their family into those homes, communicating with the communi- ty through the exterior design. That’s why the houses had to be beautiful, just as relationships between people had to be harmonious,” says exhibi- tion author Miloš Matić.

Muzej nudi degustaciju svih
