From ancient monuments to modern parks, here we present the most remarkable landmarks to explore in one of China’s core financial hubs
A cosmopolitan commer- cial centre since medi- eval times, Tianjin has a character all its own. The city has long been a key Chinese port and, as is so of- ten the case, the constant flow of people and goods into Tianjin has helped forge a distinct local culture. Rich in architectural, cultural and culinary heritage, the city is today a hotbed of development and one of China’s core financial hubs. Here’s just a shortlist of some of the best things to see and do in this dynam- ic coastal metropolis. Tianjin Eye Towering over a busy road bridge that spans the river Hai, the Tian- jin observation wheel, officially the Tientsin Eye, reveals giddying views of the city’s skyscraper-spiked sky- line as its massive 120-metre di- ameter gradually turns. Rotations take around 30 minutes, with the capsules providing room for up to eight passengers. The best time to step aboard is immediately after sun- set, when the city is bathed in a soft light and the neon signs blink on to cast their glittering reflections across the river. Cultural Square This is a pleasant place to wan- der around and enjoy the fine archi- tecture and bridges along the Hai to- wards the Tianjin Eye, or to catch a boat and take a river cruise. You can see locals fishing in the river or watch newlyweds taking photos, with nearby European style build- ings providing the backdrop. During the winter months, the frozen riv-
er provides a venue for ice skating. The view at night, with its colour- ful lights, is particularly charming. Five Great Avenues This area consists of five streets named after five cities in southwest China. They are Chengdu, Chong- qing, Changde, Dali and Munan. The architecture is fabulous and walk- ing among the buildings here ena- bles you to feel the history in the air, while you wonder what life might have been like here a century ago. Folklore Museum The Tianjin Folklore Museum preserves within it Tianhou Palace, while its collections include approx- imately 2,000 folk items that repre- sent the development and customs of a great variety of aspects of daily life, trade, the arts and clothing. You can check out the development of Tianjin’s maritime transportation, fishing and salt trade. You can al- so enjoy folk art in the form of clay sculptures, brick carvings, paper cut- tings and weavings. Nanshi Cuisine Street This is not so much a street of eateries as it is a huge food shopping centre built to resemble an ancient Chinese walled citadel – complete with a modern musical fountain at its centre. There are more than 100 different food stalls for you to wan-
