With tens of billions of total views, video clips from #BookTok have propelled titles to the top of bestseller lists and helped new authors establish their careers. This social media giant is very well aware of its popu- larity, which is why it has utilised its users’ deep-root- ed love for literature to launch an official literary club. The TikTok Book Club is open to everyone, as is the #BookTok hashtag, but it also has an organised structure. Each month, a new book is announced that members can read together, sharing their experiences and opinions. The TikTok app itself also has a special hub dedicated to the Book Club, which displays infor- mation on the new title of the month. “From spotlighting little-known authors and genres to introducing the classics to a new generation, #Book- Tok has helped to reignite a passion for literature and we [are] creating a new take on the much-loved #Book- Club format, so our community can continue to con- nect, spark conversations and share the books they love most,” said James Stafford, head of partnerships and community at TikTok. The virtual community includes a team of “Book- Tok Laureates”: a group of TikTokkers who are pas- sionate about reading and delve into each novel, shar- ing their impressions through a series of content. The group hosts a live broadcast at the end of each month to discuss the book of the month. This summer’s choice for the book club’s first book was Jane Austen’s timeless novel Persuasion. The recent Netflix adaptation of this novel contributed to the pop- ularity of this work and interest in it, while the hash- tag #AustenTok links a huge community of this au- thor’s fans within TikTok itself, with millions of views.
