The first public drinking fountains emerged along the route of the then Roman aqueduct, and it was from the 15 th century that they became genuine sculptural works, as is the case with the Vizier’s Fountain of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović

TERAZIJE FOUNTAIN Every tourist who visits Belgrade probably takes a photo of the famous Terazije Fountain, which
stands in the street that’s named after it, on the plateau beside the Hotel Moskva. Built in 1860 ac- cording to the design of stonemason and sculptor Franz Laurent, it symbolises the return to the throne of Prince Miloš Obrenović, whose initials are carved into all four sides of the obelisk. Sculpted from a limestone block quarried from Tašmajdan, Terazi- ja Fountain consists of a four-sided column topped by a metal vase, with a total height of approximate- ly eight metres, mounted in an octagonal basin with a diameter of 10 metres. Each side sports a li- on’s head at the centre of a circular medallion, al- so carved in stone, with spouts from which water flows constantly..
