ČUKUR FOUNTAIN Čukur Fountain is located in Dobrači- na Street and is characterised by the bronze statue of a boy lying on a marble slab. The sculpture, official- ly named “Boy With a Broken Jug”, was authored by Serbian academic and sculptor Simeon Roksandić, who cre- ated it in 1931 to memorialise an in- cident that occurred on the same site in June 1862. The boy depicted is 13-year-old apprentice Sava Petk- ović, who had been sent to fetch water from the Čukur drinking fountain. How- ever, Turkish soldiers also happened to be at the fountain when he arrived. They tried to take his jug from him and ended up killing Sava when he resist- ed. Serbian gendarmes quickly ar- rived and arrested the killers, but other Turkish soldiers came to the aid of their comrades and the situation erupted into a fierce battle between Serbs and Turks in Belgrade.

HAJDUK’S FOUNTAIN The hajduk’s drinking fountain, Hajdučka čes- ma, is located in Košutnjak forest and is as- sociated with two very different events: the 1868 murder of Prince Mihailo Obrenović, which took place nearby; and the legendary 1977 concert of rock band Bijelo Dugme. As-
sumed to have been built in the late 18 th cen- tury, it is among the oldest remaining spring water fountains, though the origin of its name remains unknown, as do many other details... Specifically, the first recorded reference to it appears in the will of Dositej Obradović, who expressed his wish to be buried alongside the Hajduk’s fountain. The fountain’s current look, with profiled stone alcoves, dates back to the end of the 19 th century, while its other surfac- es were covered with artificial stone during the 20 th century.
