Sremac monument The monument at the start of Kopitare- va Street (Kazandžijsko sokače) is ded- icated to Stevan Sremac, a late-19 th century Serbian writer, and his friend Kalča, who’s also a character from Sremac’s novel Ivko’s Feast. The mon- ument was erected on the site of the original house of Živko Mijalković, aka Ivko the boss, a wealthy craftsman from Niš. Sremac came to the city from the north of Serbia and was captivated by the directness, humour and lifestyle of the people of Niš, particularly their dia- lect. He liked to socialised with the “ordi- nary world” and found inspiration in the taverns and craft shops of Niš, where he lived from 1879 to 1892. The bronze sculpture, depicting the writer, the hunt- er Kalča and his dog Čapa, is the work of sculptor Ivan Felker.
