filmmaker Are you brave enough to become a pirate? celebrated director and screenwriter, who says that his new series - Our Flag Means Death - poses many important questions while compelling us to laugh until we burst into tears We’re asked this question by this New Zealander Taika Waititi is a renaissance man who wanted to become a paint- er, built a name for himself as a come- dian, then conquered the world as a director and screenwriter. His short film Two Cars, One Night was nomi- nated for an Oscar in 2005, but it was only much later that he won one of the much-coveted golden statuettes for Jojo Rabbit, a satirical comedy that competed for Academy Awards in six categories and won one for best adapted screenplay. His film Boy, an emotive tale about a criminal father’s return to his son’s life, became the most watched New Zealand film ever, while his pseudo-documentary about the se- cret life of vampires in Wellington, What We Do In The Shadows?, gained popularity worldwide and an Amer- ican TV series adaptation. He joined the cream of Hollywood through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, by di- recting the third, and to date most successful, film in the Thor franchise. Following the success of Ragnarok, he received the opportunity to direct the fourth instalment in the fran- chise, Thor: Love and Thunder, for which he also wrote the screenplay,

Mora- li ste da budete kul i teš- ki, ali i smešni i ranjivi na momente... – Osecao sam iste frustracije kao Crnobradi. Odrastao sam u si- romaštvu i želeo sam da vidim ka- kav je život na drugoj strani kolo- seka. Sada se družim sa ljudima u ovom svetu novca i uspeha. I Cr- nobradi se na kraju nađe u viso- kom društvu, ali se uvek podseca na to odakle dolazi, pa ima i ogorče- nost prema svetu. Definitivno sam to osetio u mladosti, negodovanje prema bogatima i prema kolonijal- nim silama koje su tlačile moj na- rod. I sada se pitam: da li je treba- lo da postanem filmski stvaralac? Imao sam sjajnu karijeru, ali sva- ki čovek se pita da li bi bio srecniji da radi nešto drugo. I to se dešava sa Crnobradim. Bio je najpoznatiji gusar na svetu, ali nije bio srecan. Setovi su bili impresivni, imate li neke favorite? – Voleo sam francuski brod sa tom ogromnom žurkom, pažnja po- svecena detaljima je bila nevero- vatna. Ali moj omiljeni set je bio brod Osveta . Iza nas su bili ogro- mni ekrani sa okeanom i talasima. Neki ljudi bi prvi put ušli u čamac i počeli da osecaju morsku bolest. Stvarno ste se osecali kao da ste na moru. Imali smo vetar i zvuk škri- pe čamca. Bilo je divno. Imate li uopšte nautič- ke veštine, da li biste mo- gli da podignete glavno jedro? – Znam da veslam u čamcu i dobar sam u kajaku. Ali ja nisam mornar. Bio sam na nekoliko jedre- nja kao klinac, samo nisam obra- cao mnogo pažnje, bilo je i boljih stvari. Ne bih mogao da vam na- vedem nijedan deo čamca ili kako da namotate konopac.

In the meantime, we’re watching him on HBO Max in another perfor- mance typical for him, in the comedy series Our Flag Means Death, which is partly based on the real-life adven- tures of Stede Bonnet, a pampered aristocrat who abandoned a life of privilege to become a pirate. Waititi himself appears as Blackbeard, the scariest pirate to have ever lived, while the lead role is played by Rhys Dar- by. This series is another intelligent comedy that isn’t just fun entertain- ment, but rather gets to grips with complex topics in a humorous way, as Waititi tells us himself... Pirates must be a great gen- re to have some fun... - I wasn’t a huge pirate fan grow- ing up. I tended to associate them with Halloween costumes and silly things that kids would be into. Then Pirates of the Caribbean came along and tried to make pirates cool and sexy, but that felt like a fantasy world. When this came about, I was real- ly excited about showing what hap- pens in the downtime, when you’re not swashbuckling and you’re not raiding ships. How important was it to sidestep the stereotypes sometimes associated with pirates? - Very. I think this world is ridic- ulous enough without adding parrots. What I love about this is that it is a fully formed story with fleshed-out characters that all have arcs. It is hi- larious, but there are some great dra- matic moments, and it’s about some- thing: the idea of the midlife crisis and what happens to people when they go, ‘Is this it? I had dreams. Is this all I can expect from my one life?’ I think everyone has those feelings, though we’re not brave enough to ac- tually go out and be a pirate, or leave our families, or to do the stuff Stede has done. We’re experiencing what it might be like to go out and do that. That is what attracted you to this story, among other things… - The theme is important - the idea that he’s gone out and is reaching
