49 th Belgrade fashion week From deconstruction to science fiction In Belgrade we’ve seen everything you could possibly want: from men’s suits in lollypop colours to dresses inspired by science fiction and river sprites
Y es, fashion has returned to life, or life has re- turned to fashion. We enjoyed the 49 th edi- tion of Belgrade Fash- ion Week, which showed that our city can stand side by side with world metropolises. As fashion studio Klik has accustomed us to expect, the pro- gramme was varied, educational and socially responsible. And the actual fashion shows were a story in their own right. We saw what our local fashion scene’s famous figures have to tell us and the considerations of the new gen- erations who are just entering the fashion world. Running through everything we saw – regardless of whether from unique or mass pro- duction collections – is the idea that there’s no more blindly following trends, that the individual is at the centre of attention and that the de- signs serve to help visually empha- sise the essence of the wearer. The colour palette was stronger, as expected in all collections intend- ed for warmer days, while prints were also represented and cobalt blue, alongside white, definitely dominat- ed throughout the whole of fashion week. When it comes to cuts, they proved to be more imaginative than we’re used to, from draped, twisted and flipped parts where you least ex- pect them, with silhouettes that cel- ebrate femininity but do so without stressing the emphasising of the fig- ure. Comfortable forms are present in all pieces, but more in the sense of layering, three-dimensionality and draping than the oversized cuts that dominated in spring.
Inspiration is also a story in its own right, from artworks, via wa- ter sprites and science fiction, to the old crafts or our cultural heritage. Everything was bursting with de- signs that make feelings of comfort, freedom and enjoyment an impera- tive. A different approach has been running through fashion for the last few years, one without strict deter- mining factors and with more sug- gestions, and mostly based on follow- ing the spirit of the modern woman, her sensibilities and needs. Howev- er, every fashion week – regardless of how many different creative stories are presented – is expected to con- clude with the extracting of the main determining factors and guidelines, and for everything that’s been seen to be somehow divided into some categories popularly dubbed trends.
The first and most important is that the majority of pieces have been created in the spirit of sustainabili- ty and the modern lifestyle, so they are wearable on different occasions and even during different seasons, with a small change in details. And that’s just what the modern wom- an needs: to be able to leave work, grab some chunky item of jewellery, tulle scarf, belt or whatever from her purse and head straight to a cock- tail party. Proving to be absolutely dom- inant were flared trousers, dunga- rees, dresses with interesting cuts in all lengths, from maxi to mini, puff sleeves, layering, crop tops replaced by crop jackets, details in unexpect- ed places, and pockets as a vague as- sociation with the safari style, but with a modern twist.
