KRUŠEDOL MONASTERY One of Fruška Gora’s best-known mon- asteries is Krušedol, both due to its long history and its exceptional architecture, but also the relics located there. Specifi- cally, this is the final resting place of Des- pot Đorđe Branković, Patriarch Arsenije III Čarnojević, Princess Ljubica Obrenović and King Milan Obrenović. Here, thanks to this monastery having been spared major physical damage during World War II, you can see frescoes dating back to the 18th century, as well as an iconos- tasis with parts from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery is located in a shallow valley in the south-eastern part of Fruška Gora. Its church is ded- icated to the holiday of the Annuncia- tion to the Blessed Virgin Mary (7 th April). Krušedol Monastery is part of the leg- acy of the Branković family. Built at the behest of Bishop Maksim Branković be- tween 1509 and 1516, the complex con- sists of a church and lodgings forming a quadrangular cloister enclosure within a fenced park.

The monasteries of Fruška Gora Vojvodina's holy mountain preserves the spirit and soul of Serbia Fruška Gora is dubbed the Serbian Athos because it was once home to as many as 35 monasteries, and to this day as many as 17 of those that date back to medieval times, as well as two built during the more recent history, continue to be preserved

of contrasting architectural styles. The Fruška Gora monasteries be- long to the Eparchy (Diocese) of Srem, which was founded in the year 1500 and was headed at the time by the monk Maksim, former- ly Serbian despot and archbishop Đorđe Branković, whose legacy in- cludes Krušedol Monastery (which he founded together with his moth- er Angelina), and Staro and Novo Hopovo monasteries. Each Fruška Gora monastery represents an outstanding cultur- al treasure, and the frescoes, but also the monasteries and church buildings themselves, present pic- tures of different historical periods and construction styles, from Serbi- an-Byzantine to the Baroque style. The walls of many of these houses of worship are adorned with art- works authored by Serbia’s great- est Baroque painters of the peri- od. Alongside the abundance of spiritual riches, visiting a monas- tery on Fruška Gora will also reveal scenery that will take your breath away, as will the beautiful decidu- ous forests surrounding the monas- tery estates. Indulge in the beauti- ful scenery, wines and local culinary specialities. Touring Fruška Gora monasteries will undoubtedly leave you one incredible experience rich- er. Here we present to you just a few of the gems of Fruška Gora…

For nature lovers, Fruška Gora is the most precious decoration adorning Vo- jvodina’s lowland plain. Rich in ar- able fields, orchards and vineyards, its slopes are covered in dense de- ciduous forests above 300m/asl. Its northern side descends to the rest- less currents of the Danube, while its forests and valleys preserve pre- cious historical monuments. The area of today’s Fruška Gora National Park has been a spiritual centre of Serbia for centuries, but also a cradle of Serbian literacy, edu- cation, culture and art. A tour of this area will transport you back through time and allow you to better acquaint yourself with the history of Serbia. If you are interested in the history of spirituality and monasteries, Fruš-

ka Gora is a “must see” destination. It is interesting to note that all of Fruška Gora’s monasteries are lo- cated within an area 50km long and 10km wide. All of these sacral build- ings are worth visiting, and tour- ing their monastery complexes will evoke a specific period of history and tell you a unique story of one of the toughest periods for the Serbian na- tion, the period of Ottoman rule. It was actually Turkish invasion that caused the Serbian people to flee to these northern regions and led to a large number of monaster- ies being built in this area. Most of them were built during the 16 th century, while individual church- es and monasteries that were only completed in the 18 th century rep- resent an interesting combination

RAKOVAC MONASTERY Legend has it that one Raka Milošević, chief chamberlain of Despot Jovan Branković, laid the foundations of the building on this site, while the oldest re- cords of the monastery date back to the period of Ottoman rule, when the Turks conducted a census in Srem to col- lect taxes. One interesting fact is that this monastery housed a Partisan print- ing house during World War II, which the Germans “rewarded” by severely dam- aging the church and dormitory, as well as demolishing the belltower. Located on Fruška Gora’s northern slopes, its church is dedicated to the Holy Healers Cosmas and Damian (14 th July).
