crkva, i to za smeštaj i rad Patrijar- šije.
Da je Mika Alas uticao na detalje na kući, svedoči šaran u drvorezu na ulaznim vratima Testifying to Mika Alas’s influence over the details of the house is the carp carved into the wood of the front door
ka Alas, studied mathematics in Bel- grade and earned his doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1894, while one of his greatest achievements was the es- tablishing of the Serbian Mathemat- ical School. He had the Kosančićev Venac house built in 1910, on the site of the house of his grandfather, an archpriest of Belgrade, to represent a single-storey family house in typi- cal Belgrade style. Above the entrance stands an elegant balcony, which ex- tends into the house to form what was his work studio. Above the bal- cony is a circular section with red and white tiles, geometric orna- mentation that’s a recognisable el- ement of Serbo-Byzantine architec- ture, and the head of a woman whose hair extends to form a floral orna- ment, which was a detail borrowed
from the Art Nouveau style that was then popular in Europe. The house, which was a place for local and for- eign scientists to gather, but also Mi- ka Alas’s relatives, still stands on the same spot. With its new, strikingly coloured façade, it has been classified as a cultural monument since 1966. THE HOUSE OF DIMITRIJE KRSMANOVIĆ Wealthy, powerful and respected families built their houses in the area of Kosančićev Venac, and the influen- tial Krsmanović family was no excep- tion – building their family house in the immediate vicinity of the Cathe- dral Church and the Patriarchate. The owner was merchant and philanthro- pist Dimitrije Krsmanović. The Krs- manovićs bought the plot of land on
