I WAS 14 AND SPENT ALL DAY HANGING OUT AT FEST Director Stefan Arsenijević’s film As Far As I Can Walk / Strahinja Banović opened this year’s jubilee edition of FEST. The film had its world premiere at the 55 th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it won a total of five awards, including the top prize of the Grand Prix Crystal Globe for Best Film. “It is an exceptional honour to open a festival where I’ve been a loyal spectator for decades; a festival that shaped my taste in film and view of the world; a festival that has a special emotional place in my life. The first time I was at FEST was precisely 30 years ago, and to this day I still recall that edition vividly, because it left an indelible mark on me. I was 14 and spent all day hanging out at the festival, with a sandwich in my bag, not wanting to miss out on anything. That 1992 was really an extraordinary year in terms of film. FEST opened with Srđan Karanović’s Virgina, while Kusturica brought Jim Jarmusch and Johnny Depp as guests, and the films that were then current are today classics: Night on Earth, Barton Fink, High Heels, My Own Private Idaho, Thelma & Louise, Delicatessen etc. The world exploded in front of my eyes, in all of its multiplicity and creativity. Thirty years on and my own film is opening FEST. That feeling is fantastic,” said Stefan Arsenijević, director of the film As Far As I Can Walk / Strahinja Banović, speaking on the occasion of his film’s Serbian premiere at FEST.

“Brave New World”, opened on 9 th January 1971 at trade union hall Dom Sindikata, with a screening of Robert Altman's Mash. Envisaged as an annual cross-sectional review of the season’s best films, the Belgrade International Film Festival – FEST grew to become one of the most im- portant film festivals and a central event in the cultural life of Belgrade, alongside which many young gen- erations have grown up. FEST began quite spectacular- ly with its very first edition, featur- ing screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey, Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, the aforementioned Mash, but also films by Éric Ro- hmer, Luis Buñuel, Živojin Pav- lović et al. Although many, nostal- gically but justifiably, consider that first edition of FEST as being un- surpassed, the truth is that, over subsequent years, FEST con- tinued to present its audi- ences with films that would go down in history as be- ing among the best in world cinematography. Throughout all these years, this festival has been characterised by the fact that its doors have remained wide open to all of the world’s cinematography scenes and all relevant filmmakers, but also to films that wouldn’t find themselves on cinema repertoires.
