THE FIRST THING YOU MIGHT NOTICE ABOUT TRI- ESTE is how little it resembles an Italian city. Its entire history can be seen in the colourful mix of peo- ple, languages, cuisines and architec- ture… All arranged in the near-per- fect setting of broad streets and squares overlooking the Adriatic. Piazza Unità d’Italia The largest square in the older part of Trieste is the Piazza Unità d’Italia [Unity of Italy Square], which faces the harbour. To its north side is the Palazzo del Governo (1904), to the east is the 1876 Palazzo del Mu- nicipio (City Hall), while the Teatro Verdi opera house faces the water. Castello di Miramare The white, fairy-tale Miramare Castle stands directly above the sea and provides artfully framed views from almost every window of its sumptuously decorated rooms. The terraced gardens of the park offer even more magnificent views, while the grounds are filled with tropical and exotic trees and plants. Museo Civico Revoltella At the corner of the Piazza Ven- ezia, the Revoltella Museum is one of Italy’s major modern art galleries, with more than a thousand paintings and 800 sculptures, as well as prints TRIESTE Beautiful amphitheatre with the Adriatic as a stage
and drawings. Its six floors and 40 rooms cover all major movements from the mid-1800s. Molo Audace Trieste spreads around and above its harbour like a giant amphitheatre with the Adriatic as its stage. Tour- ists join locals to catch the breeze and watch the sunset from the long Mo- lo Audace, a pier that extends more than 250 metres into the Adriatic and also provides beautiful views of the city. Several tourist attractions are situated along the harbour, includ- ing an aquarium, railway and mari- time museum. Canale Grande North of Piazza Unità d’Italia is the Canale Grande (1756), a naviga- ble canal harbour that was former- ly used by sailing ships and is now filled with small boats. Cafés line the wide walkways on either side, and be- hind them stand beautiful buildings. The area was a favourite of James Joyce, who was resident in Trieste from 1904 to 1915. He is commem- orated with a statue on one of the bridges that cross the Canale Grande. Grotta Gigante You’ll be impressed as you stand inside the main underground cham- ber of this giant cave, which is 98 metres high, 76 metres wide and 167 metres long. This and the oth- er galleries are studded with stalac- tites and stalagmites in all sorts of colours and shapes. Until 2010, the Guinness Book of Records listed Grotta Gigante as the largest cave in the world that’s open for tourists, but that record was broken with the opening of La Verna cave in France.
