He also had a scarecrow in the garden. At the museum they even claim that he once had to hide up a fig tree in the garden. Not wanting to converse with a certain Friar Ivo, he told Milica to tell him that he wasn’t home and climbed the fig tree. But Milica decided to have fun at her husband’s expense, so she offered Friar Ivo a coffee and left Andrić stuck in the tree! Many anecdotes about their days there are recounted, including one about a fisherman who mis- took Andrić for Yuri Gagarin, whose arrival had been announced, and asked him: “Mr cosmonaut, how is it up there?” To which Andrić responded by looking sky- wards and saying “I don’t know, but it’s certainly better than down here…” Their years of unbridled happiness in that house ended after five years, when Milica passed away in her yard. Ivo never returned. The house was inherited by Milica’s sister, Danka, who offered it to Zuko Džum- hur. It remains recorded that this great artist said: “who am I to live in Andrić’s house?” This place of the writer’s joy was then bought by the Municipality and became a nursery school, and later a restaurant, only to recently realise its true purpose by being converted into a me- morial museum to Andrić and his days spent in Herceg Novi, which he loved so much…
