Posle gotovo 2.000 kon- cerata, 13 albuma, četiri Gremi nagrade, osam nagrada JazzTimes and Downbeat , stoti- ne masterklasova u obrazovnim institucijama širom sveta i više od 19 članova benda koji su se rotira- li skoro deceniju i po, činilo se da je Snarky Puppy spreman da malo uspori i uživa u vožnji. Ali nakon svog poslednjeg albu- ma Live At The Royal Albert Hall , koji je osvojio Gremi, bend radi sve osim toga, pa tako u septembru izla- zi njihov 14. album Empire Central bezrezervno ljubavno pismo Dalasu, mestu gde je sve počelo 2004. go- dine. U susret koncertu u Beogradu u organizaciji Musicology Sessions , razgovarali smo sa basistom i osniv- ačem benda Majklom Ligom. Šta beogradska publika može da očekuje na kon- certu? – Sviraćemo potpuno nov set pesama sa novog albuma Empire Central . Možda cemo ubaciti neko- liko starijih pesama, ali velika veci- na materijala ce biti potpuno nova. Sa kakvim utiscima odla- ziš iz Beograda? Kako bi opisao našu publiku? – Beograd uvek ostavi jak uti- sak na mene kad god dođem, bez obzira na to sa kim sam na turneji. Neverovatno je videti publiku, ta- ko mladu, tako punu energije, koja zaista razume šta se svira. Stičem utisak da u Beogradu postoji jaka muzička kultura. Šta mislite, kakav je zna- čaj muzike i kulture u društvu? – Mislim da je svet konačno po- čeo da posmatra umetnost kao ne- što od suštinskog značaja za našu srecu, a ne samo kao jednokratnu formu prolaznosti vremena. Ljudi sada na to gledaju kao na lek, što je upravo ono što jeste. Šta planirate u bliskoj bu- ducnosti? – Novi album Empire Central izlazi u septembru i bićemo na tur- neji većinu vremena radi promocije novog materijala. Veoma sam uz- buđen što imamo 16 potpuno no- vih pesama!
After almost 2,000 con- certs, 13 albums, four Gram- mys, eight JazzTimes and Downbeat awards, hundreds of masterclasses at educational institutions worldwide and more than 19 band members rotating over a period of almost a decade and a half, it would seem like Snarky Puppy is ready to slow down a bit and enjoy the ride. However, on the back of the success of their latest Grammy-win- ning album, Live At The Royal Albert Hall, the band is doing everything but slowing down - as demonstrated by the March 2022 recording of their 14 th album, Empire Central, which is an unapologetic love letter to the city of Dallas, where it all began for Snar- ky Puppy back in 2004. In the build- up to the Belgrade concert that’s being organised by Musicology Sessions, we spoke with bassist and band founder Michael League… What can the Belgrade audi- ence expect at your concert? “We will perform a completely new group of songs from the new album Empire Central. We might throw in a few older songs, but the vast majority of material will be brand new.” What kinds of impressions do you take away from Belgrade? How would you describe the Belgrade audience? “Belgrade always leaves a strong impression on me whenever I come, regardless of who I’m touring with. It’s amazing to see an audience that’s so young and so full of energy, and one that really understands what’s being played. I get the feeling that a strong music culture exists in Belgrade.” What do you think of the im- portance of music and culture in society? “I think the world has finally be- gun to see art as something that’s cru- cial to our happiness, and not just as a disposable way of passing time. Peo- ple now view it as medicine, which is precisely what it is.” What do you plan for the im- mediate future? “The new album, Empire Central, comes out in September and we’ll be on tour promoting the new materi- al most of the time. I’m really excited that we have 16 completely new songs!
