European film festival from 16 th to 22 nd July Palić’s oasis of nature and the arts This year’s 29 th edition of the European Film Festival will be held in Palić and Subotica, and will provide plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy all the beauty of this part of Serbia
Over the course of the pre-festival programme and its central events, more than 100 films from all regions of Europe will be presented to the audience in 15 different selection categories and programme units. Alongside a rich film programme, visitors will also be able – like in previous years – to enjoy numerous dynamic ancillary contents, including concerts, exhi- bitions, promotions, workshops and expert lectures. When it comes to the festival’s film programme, the most nota- ble selections are competitive and bring the latest European titles to the Main Competition Programme, as well as bringing the most en- gaged Eastern European films to the Parallels and Encounters selec- tion. One of the festival’s most im- portant events is the awarding of the Aleksandar Lifka Award for out- standing contributions to European cinema, which brings legends of do- mestic and European cinema to the festival and to meet the audience. All the glory of art nouveau It isn’t only an always carefully conceived, European-focused film programme that ensures Palić Film Festival ranks among the most at- tractive film events, but rather al- so the fact that it is held at some of the most beautiful locations an- ywhere in Vojvodina and through- out Serbia. Subotica is known as an art nouveau city, with this ar- tistic direction reflected primarily
in the high art of the city’s archi- tecture. The city centre is home to the most beautiful Vienna Seces- sion-inspired art nouveau buildings, so festivalgoers can also tour Sub- otica’s most representative edifices: the City Hall, Synagogue, Reichl Pal- ace, the Putnik building and others. Tour guides often also devise spe- cial “Routes of Art Nouveau” tours that exclusively visit buildings rep- resenting this style. Palić Lake and catamaran cruise Palić Lake, occupying the cen- tral spot of the festival site, is among Vojvodina’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Together with the landscaped walkways surrounding it, this lake represents the perfect spot for strolling and relaxing dur- ing the day, prior to the start of the evening’s premiere film programme. Catamaran rides are among the most popular day-trip activities. Lasting 45 minutes, they provide the possibility to cruise the entire lake. You can rent rowing boats and pedal boats at the dock next to the lake’s Women’s Lido, while you can also rent four-wheeled rickshaw bi- cycles specially made to cater for
