haps the best received among both audiences and critics alike. Thor: Love and Thunder, under the direction of talented Oscar-win- ner Taika Waititi, deals largely with Thor’s quest to find inner peace. Now “retired” from active superhe- ro duty, Thor’s peace is broken by the reappearance of galactic killer Gorr, whose task is to butcher de- ities. Thor seeks help from Queen Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Port- man), who surprisingly shows an ability to wield his hammer like a female version of Thor. The two embark on a new adventure and fight to prevent Gorr from slaying all the gods. Stylistically and aesthetically, Waititi envisaged this film as an homage to 1980s action films, but also as a more personal love story. “When I joined the Marvel universe, I wanted to take a slightly different approach, with even more colour-
fulness and emotion. I frankly al- so bring even more demanding act- ing, because I consider myself one of the laziest living actors. However, although my role as Korg is a voice role and the character is animated, acting in the suit I was under was a real challenge, so I really evalu- ated myself and really acted, and it wasn’t just an accent and banter.” Waititi also co-authored the script together with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who he said was an out- standing scriptwriter, but that he also wanted the female part of the story – alluding to Portman’s char- acter (Jane Foster) – to be told bet- ter. We could also interpret this as his wish to elevate the feminist tone that’s been prominent in more re- cent Marvel films to the next level, following the not-so-well-received Captain Marvel and Eternals. Like most films shot during the pandemic, Thor: Love and Thun- der endured a hellish production.
Instead of the original shoot loca- tions in the U.S. and UK, it was shot in Australia during the peri- od from January to June 2021, af- ter which the premiere was pushed back four times. Marvel and Disney see Love and Thunder as their big summer hit that will surely be the latest in the series - the 11 th , to be precise – to generate earnings ex- ceeding a billion dollars. Following Thor’s release, we can also expect the release of the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever by the end of this year, but also as many as four new MCU films so far announced for 2023: Ant- Man and the Wasp: Quantuma- nia, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels and the Fantastic Four reboot. Other Marvel and Disney projects currently in the pre-pro- duction phase include Blade, a Cap- tain Marvel sequel and a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
