ern part of the mountain and also known as Ravna Tara, it represents a natural link between this mountainous area and Zlatibor. This area is best known for the fact that it was right here that Josif Pančić discovered the Serbian spruce, while it is today a favourite destination for sports anglers and nature lovers. The artificial lake, which emerged over the course of several years, is surrounded by green conifers that provide a perfect match for the turquoise hue of the water, which is why it comes as no surprise that people are increasingly choosing to cool off here during the summer months. The fact that Zaovine is home to around half of all Tara’s flora and fauna testifies to just how clean this area is. Arilje If your only associations with Arilje are cotton T-shirts and raspberries, it's high time you better familiarised your- self with this part of Serbia. Okay, raspberries are indeed a trademark of this area, so there is also the “Route of Red Gold” tour that leads visitors to the villlages where they can pick and taste this fruit and products made from it. But that’s far from being all there is to do here during the summer, especially when you have the im- maculately clean river Rzav and its beaches in front of you. Also located nearby is the natural phenomenon of the Water Cave, which can be accessed via the gorge of the river Panjica and has a magnificent waterfall in front of its entrance. Pešter plateau The Pešter plateau is located between seven moun- tains, which instantly provides a fairy-tale element to hol- idaying in this area. It is framed by the mountains of Go- lija, Javor, Jadovnik, Zlatar, Giljevo, Ozren and Žilindar. Contributing to the awe-inspiring impression are idyl- lic scenes of flocks of sheep, herds of cattle and bands of horses roaming the undulating pastures. The cold cli- mate here has led to it being dubbed the Balkan Siberia, while it is also known as the Serbian Tibet due to its large number of cultural and historical monuments. The main attractions are Sjenica Lake and Tubića Cave. Nature lov- ers are also attracted to Đalovića Cave and the healing waters of the hot springs located in the village of Čedo- vo near the entrance to the town of Sjenica.

ing both winter and summer, observation points suited to creating the most beautiful photographs, locations rich in historical heritage. The Black River canyon, and the numerous waterfalls located here, certainly won’t leave you feeling indifferent, while there’s also the Church of St. Demetrius and the memorial ossuary containing the mortal remains of soldiers who fell during World War I’s famous Battle of Kolubara. Tara and Perućac Legend has it that Tara was named after the ancient Slavic god Tar, and the divine beauty of this mountain is reflected in its dense forests, “carpet meadows”, the clear water of Lake Perućac, fantastic observation points etc. Few are left feeling indifferent by the view from Banjs- ka stena or Bilješka stena, where you can touch the tops of Serbian spruces, and while hiking to Tara’s peaks you can also encounter deer, rare birds (more than 130 spe- cies have found a haven on this mountain), the most di- verse plant life (a third of Serbian flora, with 1,000 differ- ent plant species) etc. Passing by the foot of Tara is the river Drina, which feeds Lake Perućac, the pearl of this area and a favourite bathing spot during the summer. Created with the damming of the Drina, the lake is lo- cated at an elevation of 290 metres above sea level and is up to 60 metres deep. The longest section of the lake, the canyon section, is surrounded by extremely steep banks framed by stone cliffs that plunge straight into the water. Apart from being stunningly beautiful, this lake is also ideal for swimming and fishing. Zaovine Lake The road will probably lead those seeking something slightly less famous to Zaovine Lake.
