N etflix is known as a streaming service that spares no expense when it comes to making its own projects, regardless of their success. When it comes to The Crown, however, every dollar invested has paid off through growing viewing figures and numerous awards. The fifth season will find itself in front of the viewing public on 9 th November, and – just like the previous four – will com- prise ten episodes. As has been the case to date, the show’s entire cast changes every two seasons, so Queen Eliza- beth II will this time be portrayed by Imelda Staunton, following Claire Foy and Olivia Colman. This season was hit by plenty of controversy during the pre-production stage, with nobody sure about how it would address the death of Lady Diana, with that event being very adeptly avoided in the films Diana, starring Naomi Watts, and Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart. The plot of season four of The Crown culminated on Christmas Day 1990, with Charles and Diana having de- cided to end their marriage, but not yet formally separat- ed. The show has so far won seven Golden Globes, four of which were secured for the previous season, when it won the award for the best series, while as many as three of its stars took home prestigious awards for best acting per- formance: Josh O’Connor for the role of Prince Charles, Emma Corrin for Princess Diana and Gillian Anderson for her fantastic interpretation of Margaret Thatcher. Season five focuses on events between 1992 and the late ‘90s. The two most important events of that period – the royal divorce and the death of Lady Di – will be the main elements of the plot and – as is the case with every project of this type – the royal family tried to meddle in the rewriting of the script, which Netflix didn’t permit. However, the production company was forced to indi- cate that certain events depicted in the series are partly fictional and the result of dramatic license. The upcoming sixth season will be the last. It will fo- cus on the early 2000s and is set to hit screens in Novem- ber 2023, though production has been suspended twice due to COVID and Queen Elizabeth II’s recent death. Each season of The Crown costs an impressive 130 mil- lion dollars, bringing the total budget to a whopping 780 million dollars. The Crown – season five The divorce and demise of Lady Di Alongside the spin-offs of Game of Thrones and The Lord of The Rings, The Crown has been declared the third most highly anticipated series of the year, and we’ll finally be able to watch it as of 9 th November
Who is who in the new season? Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) - Staunton is best known to au- diences around the world for her role in the film Vera Drake, which resulted in her being nominated for a 2005 Oscar. Her long stage and screen career has already lasted 40 years. Prince Philip (Jonathan Pryce) - Pryce has long been known as one of the top British actors, though he only recently received his first Os- car nomination, for his role as Pope Francis in the film The Two Popes. Princess Margaret (Lesley Manville) - despite being highly respect- ed in acting circles, Lesley only achieved international fame in 2017, when she was finally nominated for her first Oscar, in the category of best supporting actress, for her role in the film Phantom Thread. Prince Charles (Dominic West) - audiences certainly responded most vehemently to the casting of this character, due to the gener- al opinion that actors who are much better looking than the charac- ter they portray are chosen for the role of Prince Charles, which is al- so the case in this instance. Lady Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) - Elizabeth is officially the tallest ac- tress in Hollywood, at a whopping 1.9 metres (6’3”), which auto- matically made her the tallest actress in the entire cast. Due to the marked difference in height, her scenes with Dominic West saw the two filmed from different angles.
