Film awards season Jane Campion Vs. Spielberg and Branagh The nominations for the 94 th Academy Awards will be announced on 8 th February, while the award ceremony itself will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 27 th March, and the Oscar frontrunners have already been singled out: The Power of the Dog,

Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Jap- anese director Ryusuke Hamagu- chi's Drive My Car, which won the awards of the New York Film Crit- ics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. This rare com- bination has only ever occurred six times previously, and has each time resulted in an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Picture, though this has never before been achieved by a foreign language film. Alongside the aforementioned works, the race to be declared the best film and take the golden statu- ette also includes Paul Thomas An- derson's Licorice Pizza, Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard, Ad- am McKay’s satire Don't Look Up, CODA and The Tragedy of Macbeth. Best director Judging by the number of awards won, one of this category’s most obvious winners is Jane Cam- pion, who was nominated back in 1994 for her directing of The Piano, for which she also won the Acade- my Award for Best Screenplay.
