. ' O ' The Harvest ijr DR. S. J. BOLE J / ofessor of Biology, Wheaton College Wheaton, Illinois

Dr. Leander S. Keyser, the eminent educator and author, says of Prof. Bole’s book: “Having read this book in manuscript^ form with much pleasure and profit, I desire to recommend it to others. It is written by a man who is both a Christian and a scientist. To my mind, that is a good combination and equip ment. Added force is given to the author’s argument by the fact that he himself was once caught in the meshes of the evolutionary theory and was for a time an advocate of it. * * * Professor Bole has given us a good book one of the best yet published on the anti-evolution side * * * which will accomplish much good in setting forth the true doctrine concerning the world of nature—which is God’s world—and which ought to be interpreted reverently as under His all-seeing eye.” These are days when .Defenders of the Faith need just such a book to strengthen their faith and intensify their zeal in standing firm for the Word of God. The concluding chapter of The Modern Triangle: Evolution, Philosophy, Criticism , just published by the Biola Book Room, the first eight chapters of which appeared in The King’ s Business during 1925. |N the Book we read that, “ as ye sow so shall ye reap.” We have sown the seed of a materialistic philosophy, evolution, and destructive criticism. What shall the harvest be? Back of conduct is the free-will and back of free-will is philosophy. Therefore the results of materialism are many. As much is now being written on this subject we shall-briefly touch on a few of the results. Evolution would have us believe that man is slowly groping his way into a perfect state, that the world is get ting better as the centuries go by. But history and human experience prove that nations rise^only to fall, and that men left to themselves retrograde unless they yield their lives to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. At present the prisons and Jails of the country are filled to overflowing, a majority of the prisoners being young men of American origin. At present, sociologists, lawyers, and Judges are meeting to discuss or devise some plan to lessen immorality and crime. No, we should not deceive ourselves. Men are not living better lives as the centuries go by. The Foundation of All Law People often fail to realize that the constitutions and legal systems of national governments rest on the com mandments written by Moses. Christian men and nations are the only exception to the results of this “ back to nature” philosophy which insists that “ might makes right." What is there in evolution to fight for? An animal ancestry, a mysterious fate governing one’s life, the rather startling conviction that death ends all. Compare this with the Christian’s belief— pardon for sin, salvation through the shed blood, and life everlasting. An unknown God will not save a person in a known world. Man needs a God "without beginning of days or end of years,” one that can roll back the stone from the sepulcher and cause the dead to live again. In a time of great need the materialist prays to his God but the cry is unheard, no voice answers back. Compare ■’this god of the materialist with the Christian’s prayer-hear ing and prayer-answering God, who created man in His own image and promises that whosoever believeth in Him shall never perish but have everlasting life. What is it that the evolutionist is fighting for? What shall the harvest be? Another answer is the taint of materialism in daily papers, magazines, encyclopaedias, and school and college text-books. This taint was never greater than at present. Wealth is one altar at which Amer icans worship; learning is another. But the taint of mater ialism is also upon high school, college, and university. It is true that not all teachers and professors are liberals or destructive critics. There are a few God-fearing Christian

teachers in nearly every college or university. But such radical liberals as Carver, of Harvard; Faunce, of Brown; McGiffert, of Columbia; Youtz, of Oberltn; Sellers, of Mich igan; Matthews, Foster, G. B. Smith, Newman, and Ames, of Chicago; and Ward, of Wisconsin, seem to have a tremen dous influence not only upon the student body but upon the teaching staff of these institutions. Liberal Re-Definitions of Scriptural Terms What about the Protestant seminaries? I am asked this question often. There are a few that are still “ contending for the faith.” The large majority, however, in this cotin- try áre in the hands of the liberals. The mass of people do not realize these things. Christian friends of mine who have heard Shailer Matthews or Fosdick preach, have declared them orthodox. Most people do not know that Bibib terms have been and are continually being redefined. A liberal states that he believes in prayer,„in God, in salva tion, in a cross, but his definitions are not those of orthodox Christianity, and so many are confused. It is true that some of these liberals see the catastrophe ahead. A minister in New York writes that, “ The danger of liberalism now is that it will discard the Bible altogether. If it does,, then liberalism, as we have it, will deserve only death and the world were better off without it” ( “ The Christian Register,” Aug. 26, 1920, p. 14). However, the liberal seems unable to “ about face” and become a child of God. A related result of modern tyological philosophy is the evolutionary system of education in America. This means that our education is pagan, not Christian. With few excep tions, American educators believe that the body and mind have evolved together in the race as they also develop in the life of the individual from infancy to maturity. In other words, mental life is as much the product of biological evo lution as is physical life. In view of this, all mental facts
