HELP US RAISE $30,000 TO FIGHT ALZHEIMER’S
In early 1992, I lost my job at a local law firm. It was a humbling moment. But when one door closes, another opens — and I turned that loss into an opportunity to start a new practice. Now, in 2022, I get to celebrate that practice’s 30th anniversary. Yes, you read that correctly: Eagle & Fein’s Indianapolis office is turning 30 years old this summer! I can hardly believe it. It seems like just a few years ago that I called up my dad, who was working in business, tax, and estate planning in New York City, and asked him for advice on opening a boutique law firm just like his. I only had one client but I had plenty of ambition.
When he did, he said, “If you start this firm, you are going to starve for a while, and it will be tough to get going. Why not start as my back-office support?”
My team and I wanted to do something big to celebrate this amazing 30-year journey, so we set out on a quest. We are raising “$30,000 for 30 Years” to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and fund their search for a cure! The cause is very close to my heart, and you can join us in giving back and making a difference by following the QR code on this page. It feels surreal that losing my job in 1992 led me to this engine of good. I still laugh looking back on that very first conversation with my dad, because it turned out to be a sign of things to come. Later in life our careers came full circle. Dad retired, and when he called me there were many times I would have to say, “Dad, I’m a little busy — can I call you back tomorrow?” Right now, I am busy raising money for Alzheimer’s! I hope you and our other business partners will help. We linked my computer with his through the forerunner of email, pcAnywhere (remember when that was cutting-edge technology?) and I officially launched the Indianapolis, Indiana, office of Eagle & Fein in August of 1992. I was both building something of my own and continuing the legacy of the firm my dad, Sidney Eagle, founded in 1964. I was a team of one person (me!) and had an office- sharing arrangement with a tiny work area and a joint conference room. The entrepreneur across the hall and I used to joke that if we had more than one chair each that would be a mark of success. By that measure, I have definitely succeeded! Today, Eagle and Fein has grown to 11 employees, lots of chairs, and three conference rooms of our own. In the last 30 years we also grew from serving just one client to taking care of approximately 2,000 clients’ business, tax, and estate planning needs. On top of that, we also started two sister companies: Legacy Administration Services, which does all of the accounting and tax work for the estate plans we create, and Inheralink (formerly Connect2A), our client estate planning portal.

3 Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sun
Always check: Did you apply (and reapply) sunscreen? Apply sunscreen, and then reapply after going in the water or a few hours later. According to the National Cancer Institute, only about 30% of women and less than 15% of men regularly apply sunscreen, which leaves them vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays. The National Cancer Institute recommends using an SPF of at least 15 and reminds everyone to remember their feet if they are exposed! Seek out the shade. No matter the activity, try to limit your exposure to the sun — you’ll be cooler, too! Look for trees, pavilions, and shelters. When these options aren’t
It’s time for fun in the sun! Whether you’re heading out to the beach or lake, catching a ballgame, hosting a barbecue, or taking a boat tour, it’s important to protect your skin to avoid sun damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans develops skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old, and every hour, two people die of skin cancer nationally. The risk of skin cancer is severe — it’s not just one sunburn. Having five or more sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of developing skin cancer.

Wear protective clothing. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. UV protective clothing is best for maximum protection. Don’t forget about your eyes — UV sunglasses are important for your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Just because sunglasses appear dark does not mean they protect against UV rays! This summer, be sure to have fun but don’t forget to protect your skin from sunburns, possible skin cancer, and early signs of aging due to damage from sun exposure! Lather up!

OUR LAW CLERK WELCOMED A BABY GIRL
This winter, Eagle & Fein estate planning coordinator Rachel Jones shared beautiful news with our team: She and her husband, Pete, were expecting a baby girl! We celebrated the growing family in mid-April. During one lunch hour, we decorated the office and invited Pete to join us for a baby shower. It was a wonderful gathering. The pair opened gifts for their little girl, and we were over the moon for them both! (If you follow us on Facebook at Facebook.com/EagleandFein , you already saw the photos of the parents- to-be from our shower.) On April 11, 2022, Rachel and Pete welcomed little Isabella Cara Jones into the world. She is by far the cutest and youngest member of the Eagle & Fein firm family, and we are thrilled to report that both Rachel and the baby are doing well. Rachel left our firm for maternity leave as our estate planning coordinator, but welcoming a baby is not the only exciting development in her life right now. In August, she will officially start attending the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis! After maternity leave, she plans to continue her career at Eagle & Fein as our law clerk/summer associate preparing estate planning documents, conducting legal research, and
supervising estate plan funding for our clients.

Summer is here, and you know what that means: It’s time to break out the barbecue and meat skewers!
For the Marinade • 1 tbsp olive oil • INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp soy sauce
For the Skewers •
2 lbs chicken breast, cut into bite-size cubes 1 small pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes

2 tbsp chili garlic sauce
2 tbsp rice vinegar

3 tbsp honey Juice of 1 lime
3/4 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp salt
DIRECTIONS
1. In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. In a reusable freezer bag, combine cubed chicken and all but 1/4 cup of the marinade. 3. Seal bag and massage marinade into the chicken. Chill in the fridge overnight. 4. The following day, preheat the grill to 400 F. Thread chicken and pineapple onto skewers, adding two cubes of chicken for each cube of pineapple. 5. Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, brushing with the reserved marinade in the final minutes. 6. Serve over rice or with your favorite barbecue sides!

Imagine for a moment that it is 1992 again. Brian Eagle is on the brink of opening the Eagle & Fein Indianapolis office, and beyond his door is an entirely different world.

Major League Soccer. Major League soccer didn’t exist and now it has grown to 28 teams and on average 20 thousand fans attend per game. The International Space Station. Yes, Eagle & Fein predates the International Space Station! It took flight in 1998 and was first populated in 2000. Google. The search engine launched in 1997 and quickly became a verb. Smartphones. IBM’s Simon model led the way in 1994. It was the first device with apps and a touch screen … but flip phones and bricks still dominated until the iPhone was released in 2007. Netflix and YouTube. In 1992 there were no DVDs, let alone streaming! Netflix launched in 1997 to send movies by the United States Post Office, and YouTube arrived in 2005. Self-driving cars. Improvements in GPS technology and artificial intelligence (AI) made self-driving cars possible in 2012. We are still waiting to see how they change the world.

The internet had barely been invented. Public internet appeared in 1991, and the first mainstream web browser — Mosaic — was not available until 1993! There was no social media. The first-ever social media site was Six Degrees, which launched in 1997. CBS News reports it had millions of users and familiar features like profiles, friend lists, and school affiliations. Ryze (2001), Friendster (2002), and LinkedIn (2003) came along next. Out of those pioneers, only LinkedIn is still popular. It was the year of the first text message, and the first email. Did you know the first- ever text message said, “Merry Christmas!”? It was sent in December of 1992 from “a developer to the company director at Vodafone’s office Christmas party,” according to Versus. The Nokia 1011 was the exciting new phone at the time.

Noted by the New York Times as a “dashing lyric tenor,” Ganson Salmon has gained recognition for his “powerful and nuanced” performances in New York City and abroad. Most recently, Mr. Salmon was a vocal fellow at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. In summer 2021, he was a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theater of St. Louis. In 2020, Salmon performed as Pinkerton in Indianapolis Opera’s broadcast of Madama Butterfly. Before the pandemic, he went on last minute as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette at Sarasota Opera, where in 2019 he appeared as Pong in Turandot and First Armored Man in Die Zauberflöte. Mr. Salmon received his master’s from Mannes School of Music in NYC, where he performed the roles of Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress, Roderick Usher in The Fall of the House of Usher, and Anatol in Vanessa. His other operatic credits include Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Rodolfo in La bohème, and Don José in La tragédie de Carmen.
