THE KING’S BUSINESS

Thus the Christian soldier in “the midst of his enemies,” in camp and field, and perhaps with his last breath, will encourage himself and comrades, glorying in his Friend and the Captain of his Salvation, in echoes caught from the “hymns and spiritual songs” of our beloved Institute. I t is certainly interesting to see the grace of God save and transform the lives of men who are down and out. Several have re turned to give God thanks and the tran sition in their lives is most marked. The majority of men who are saved in this Mission are transients and are lost to us. Here is an extract from a letter from one of the converts who was asked to go into a pool room: “ No, I don’t go into pool rooms. Found a place to work for bed and breakfast. Next day found work. I hope to do good for myself and others by God’s help. Yours truly, in Jesus Christ.” This fellow was a sad sight. God’s grace saved him and found him work. The words o f numerous most popular songs, especially in the East, have gone out from our Institute group. Most gratifying reports of the usefulness of the sweet hymn, “Jesus Is a Friend of Mine,” in the Chap man-Alexander campaign through Scotland and England, have come to us. The latest of these is that such was its power in their Guild Hall meetings in London, attended largely by soldiers en route for the front, that, according to the papers, it bids fair to •be a “marching song” of British soldiers. O ne fellow that accepted Jesus Christ in the afternoon went out and straightened up a lot of crooked work. One man asked, “ Does a man have to get crazy and loose his mind in order to be saved?” He found Christ and got his old job back and has left his testimony a good number of times at our street meeting. O ne of the “ Bird Men” found Christ and he has now decided to keep out of the Devil’s territory—“the prince of the power of the air.” It is necessary to provide for temporal wants of men from time to time.
