highest concentration of mid-century homes in town, as well as some of the more striking designs —cantilevered second stories and whole walls of windows. Even among the less architecturally daring homes, many offer mid-century’s clean lines, light woods, open floor plans, and big windows for lots of natural light. South Hills gets its peaceful atmosphere in part from the absence of retail and dining within the neighborhood. But that doesn’t mean it’s remote: cafes, brewpubs, and unique restaurants and boutiques lie just down the hill downtown. More bars and restaurants can be found in the opposite direction, in Sabraton, along with hardware and landscaping supplies, a pharmacy, and multiple grocery stores. The neighborhood is also up the hill from the ballfields, tennis courts, and swimming pool at Marilla Park and, just beyond that, the interstate. For all its seclusion, South Hills is just a few minutes’ drive from every convenience. This is a cozy neighborhood, at just 140 homes, but interested homebuyers can usually find one or two South Hills properties on the market at any given time.

Hills sits close to everything but feels like a retreat from the fray. Homes date to the 1960s and later, many of them architecturally stylish. lying just east of morgantown , Brookhaven offers a great balance: a quick ride to town with essential shops along the way and, at the same time, the tidy newness of a suburb. The modest homes in the nearer part of this neighborhood just off of Interstate 68 date to the 1960s. But the neighborhood’s convenient location and family atmo- sphere have led to the construction of many dozens of new homes in recent years. New homes have meant more families, and Brookhaven Elementary was recently updated to accommodate higher enrollment. The school sits at the heart of the neighborhood, walking distance for many families. Close family involvement in the school carries over to neighborhood interactions—yard sales and cook-outs are common occurrences, and Halloween decorations and trick-or-treating are a major affair. While freestanding single-family homes with wide lawns are the norm in Brookhaven, low-maintenance townhome living is possible, too.
