Hit Coopers Rock State Park just outside town, where experienced climbers flock to Sunset Wall, Roadside Rocks, Upper Rock City, and Tilted Tree. AND LOVE FASTWATER The Cheat River , a tributary of the Monongahela River, offers epic whitewater. Spring and summer are the Cheat’s prime seasons. Book a trip with Cheat River Outfitters for a run through the class II-III Cheat Narrows or the class III-IV Cheat Canyon when the water is high. Local paddlers also love Big Sandy Creek , a 30-mile tributary of the Cheat River. Exploring its headwaters is a great way to get acquainted with the nuances of the Cheat. AND YOU PREFER FLATWATER The Monongahela River —affectionately called “The Mon” by locals— is a slow- moving, 130-mile waterway traversing a path from Fairmont to Pittsburgh, with at least eight access points along the river near Morgantown. Cheat Lake is a 1,730-acre dammed lake perfect for canoes, kayaks, and even SUP paddleboards. Take your own and put in at Cheat Lake Park , or rent one at Sunset Beach Marina .
