double height space and gallery reformed into the grand entrance hall; original staircase reformed into a curved oak staircase; original vaulted ceilings and A-frames reformed into a bespoke oak A-frame roof; original fireplace redeveloped into a modern double-sided fireplace; upstairs dance hall converted into an open plan living space; stonework restored with several new window openings – including a feature oak double- height screen entrance – respectfully formed; original materials – slate roof tiles and floor flags, original floor structure timber – reused as butcher’s block in contemporary kitchen;

original timber doors and windows reconstructed with energy efficient timber joinery; and original timber flooring redeveloped to form oak herringbone flooring. Challenges overcome Restoring the original features whilst creating a modern home within a relatively small budget was a challenge. The team facilitated workshops with the architect and key supply chain partners to review design proposals and deliver value engineering to ensure the project would be within the target budget. The groundworks required excavation of over 1,000 tonnes of materials, which were in shale. The team used the excavated materials to create a stepped garden, which saved 14,000 tonnes of carbon. From the judges “Good quality of finish and craftsmanship that brings this dilapidated building back into use for the next generation.” “The builder's approach was collaborative, bringing together local expertise with excellent stakeholder coordination.” “A very strong submission encompassing design, technical challenges and a strong collaborative approach to the project.”
