The bathroom needed to promote independence

Bathroom Project National Winner – Marlfield Joinery and Construction Ltd

Project overview The accessibility needs of a client, based in County Down, Northern Ireland, had changed. They needed a shower area that could support their independent living, but they didn’t want a “typical disabled bathroom” look. So Marlfield Joinery and Construction Ltd created an accessible bathroom with the comfort of a spa. Project highlights and outstanding features The bespoke shower area needed to offer the client independence, while giving the bathroom an impressive ‘spa’ aesthetic. The upgraded shower area now includes a: structural half wall with tiled finish;

digitally-operated, double- headed shower for either standing or sitting; foldable shower seat with support arms; rotating glass shower screen that can remain in a fixed position or opened onto the bathroom for assisted showering; and air body dryer as the client is unable to use a towel independently. The non-slip mosaic tiles provide grip underfoot and the level access bathroom is wheelchair-friendly should one be required in the future. Challenges overcome Floor space needed to be maximised so the bathroom door opens onto the bedroom rather than the bathroom.
