The White Lodge was an old Nottingham toll house

Project overview White Lodge in Ruddington, Nottingham, is a 200-year- old toll house with a significant local history. The client wanted to enhance their property’s aesthetics and environmental credentials whilst honouring its history. For example, IPSUM (UK) Ltd left an existing exterior wall exposed internally in the kitchen as a visual reminder of the property’s history. The kitchen – as for many families – is a hub of activity so the client wanted plenty of natural light, an open plan design and a large island to combine functionality with sociability. Project highlights and outstanding features The client wanted natural light so the team built the glazed atrium with large windows and doors. The house also needed insulation, but while the team was excavating the ground level to its required depth, they exposed the inadequate foundation of the toll house, which needed underpinning to solve the problem. White Lodge is situated on a small private road and near a bridle path, limiting access and making logistics challenging. Deliveries were carefully managed and contractors and employees car-pooled to reduce disturbances to neighbours. From the judges "Very impressive in scale and execution. A Loxone home automation electrical system controls the underfloor heating, air source heat pump (ASHP), lighting and alarm, and operates the doors and blinds built into the ceiling. The door thresholds were flush inside and out, which maximised natural light.
