As we look into the remaining three quarters of the year, we hope everyone has stayed as safe and healthy as possible in the new year. The one-year anniversary of the first COVID- 19 case to appear in New Mexico has elapsed and as we look to the future, our focus remains clear. Impaired driving is a preventable crime. Increased messages of the dangers of impaired driving, delivery of youth prevention education, and an emphasis on technology in vehicles to prevent an impaired driver from driving, will all get us to our goal of ZERO victims. We know we have work to do and will continue to provide supportive victim services and prevention programs that move our mission forward. Expanding our services outside of the Albuquerque area is a priority because we know impaired driving touches every corner of our great state. If we can be helpful to any community in New Mexico, please let us know. Stay tuned as we move toward in-person activation again. We are hopeful and can start to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. We are navigating the new normal and can't wait to see everyone outside of the virtual setting!

Preliminary data of impaired driving crashes produced by NMDOT are below. Both annual comparisons and the percentage of traffic fatalities caused by impaired driving create a clear picture of the 100% preventable crime of impaired driving. Over 55% of all traffic fatalities involved alcohol. These are not just numbers. Each number represents the human toll impaired driving has on our state. We will not stop until we have ZERO victims of drunk or drugged driving.

In observation of Alcohol Awareness Month in April and Teen Driver Safety Month in May, MADD has designated April 1 through May 31 as PowerTalk21® Season. This time of year presents multiple milestones such as prom, graduation and the start of summer break that may bring an increased presence of alcohol and other drugs for teens and young adults under 21. During this time, we are promoting our Power of Parents program and the importance of talking with youth early and often about the dangers of underaged drinking. We are also hosting a virtual Youth Advisory Board Open Forum to discuss topics surrounding underage drinking and making healthy choices. Join us for any of the free sessions below!

The Beginning of the End of Drunk Driving. MADD has worked to support technology as a solution to impaired driving for over a decade. We know that the solution to actualizing our goal of NO MORE VICTIMS begins with technology. This year has brought us closer to this reality with the work of the HALT and RIDE Act which calls for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to engage in a rulemaking process[1] that will lead to the installation of advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology in all vehicles as standard equipment[2]. The bill does not mandate any particular systems. The HALT Act is technology- neutral about which systems NHTSA mandates, but aims to get some type of advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology into all new vehicles in the near future. As MADD cited in a document submitted to NHTSA in January 2021, advanced passive drunk and impaired driving prevention technology exists and can be implemented. These technologies include both driving and driver monitoring (currently offered by several auto companies), alcohol detection, or a combination. The future is bright and MADD is at the forefront working to decrease deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving. [1] A rulemaking, in this case, is the process that the executive branch of the U.S. government will use to create standards for impairment prevention technology. The process will guide and mandate which type of technology will end up in new vehicles. Multiple types of technology will need to be tested and evaluated before standards will be set. [2] NHTSA is a federal government agency that is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation. NHTSA sets standards for new cars through a rulemaking process.

MADD New Mexico participated in the second annual Hispano Chamber of Commerce COVID-Safe Community Day in February to share information on our programs and services to over 150 vehicles!

Join us as we honor and recognize National Crime Victim Rights' Week April 18-24th. We will be posting information on the history and importance of this week on our @MADDNM Facebook page. The week will conclude with a video premiere of the reading of the proclamation made by President Reagan in 1981 establishing National Crime Victims Rights' Week and a reading of the Rights of Victims. The video will also contain stories on WHY WE FIGHT honoring individuals who lost their lives to impaired driving and remembering their lives and impact on the world. It is critical we remember that victims have rights and they are not be forgotten in the criminal system or beyond. MADD NM is hosting a virtual Law Enforcement training on May 13th 2- 3:30PM. Join us as we share information on MADD services and how we can help to support Law Enforcement throughout the state. Often times Officers and Deputies are the first ones to interact with victims and we want to make sure victims have the resources they need. Marissa Lucero
Marissa has volunteered on the MADD New Mexico State Advisory Board since the Fall of 2018. Since that time, she has chaired each year's Walk Like MADD, assisted the MADD New Mexico office with media relations, volunteered for law enforcement support events, and been integral to our fundraising efforts. We can't thank Marissa enough for her hard work and dedication to MADD New Mexico and the victims/survivors in our state. Thank you, Marissa!
