LIGHTING ONLY WHERE AND WHEN IT IS NEEDED
AMAALA is one of two regenerative tourism destinations developed by Red Sea Global on the north-western Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. The destination is powered entirely by renewa- ble energy through a fully off-grid utilities facility consisting of a 250 MW solar photovoltaic park and 700 MWh of battery storage. Thorn Lighting contributed to this project by providing lighting and controls for the utilities road network, including more than 2,300 luminaires and over 1,800 integrated PIR occupancy sensors.

AMAALA demonstrates how infrastructure lighting can simultaneously support safety, ener- gy efficiency, ecological protection and dark-sky compliance. The project provides a scalable solution for future developments seeking to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity and preserve the night sky without compromising operational performance.
DESIGNED FOR DARK SKIES
SAFE INFRASTRUCTURE LIGHTING
The entire site follows one of the most demanding dark-sky regimes in the industry. Requirements include zero upward light, a maximum colour temperature of 2700K and strict limitations on blue-rich light emissions. These measures help preserve the natural night environment while maintaining ope- rational safety. How did Thorn meet these requirements? A combination of NightTune technology coupled with controls.
The lighting system delivers reliable and standards-compliant illumination for roads, gates and operational areas, while fulfilling the security requirements of critical utilities infrastructure. At the same time, lighting levels are precisely controlled to avoid unne- cessary energy consumption.
PROTECTING SENSITIVE ECOSYSTEMS
REDUCING ENERGY DEMAND
The Red Sea coastline includes turtle nesting beaches and other ecologically sen- sitive habitats. Warm-colour lighting, precise optics and reduced operating durations help minimise the impact of artificial light on noc- turnal wildlife and surrounding ecosystems.
As AMAALA operates entirely on stored solar energy, every watt matters. Adaptive dimming profiles, occupancy sensing and in- telligent controls significantly reduce night- time energy consumption while ensuring lighting is available whenever required.
