Circular Design Rules – an innovation tool to implement the Circular Economy

With the Circular Design Rules (CDRs), the Zumtobel Group has an effective and operational tool at its disposal which helps to make the development of luminaires incrementally more circular.. The CDRs comprise four performance levels that can be achieved by a product. Each performance level is linked to specific performance requirements. The Circular Design Rules consist of the following three main pillars:

Circular Sourcing Procurement and use of materials to support a Circular Economy

Material procurement is increasingly focused on circularity and represents an integral part of the Circular Design Rules. The Zumtobel Group’s global procurement team works continuously with suppliers to identify and increase the recycling share of the materials used. During the past financial year, data quality was further improved and a gradual increase in the recycling share was identified together with suppliers. The collection of recycling rates is based on EN45557 and complies with the requirements of the European Sustai- nability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Particular attention is also paid to the ingredients of materials used. Notable substances are identified and removed as quickly as possible. The recyclability of materials used in luminaires and components is also an important criterion within the Circular Design Rules. Preference is given to materials for which suitable recycling options exist at the end of the product’s life cycle. The recyclability of materials is determined in accordance with the EN45555 standard.

Circular Design Design based on the principle of disassembly and durability

The design principle “Design for Disassembly” provides the foundation for the easy and efficient disassembly of products into materials and components after their first use phase.

Within the Circular Design pillar of the CDRs, the consistent application of this principle as well as requirements re- garding modularity, repairability and reusability are defined. The objective is to establish, already during the develop- ment and design phase, the prerequisites for a long service life, easy maintenance and the refurbishment of products and components as part of a remanufacturing process. • components can be easily dismantled, replaced and upgraded, thereby facilitating repairs and modernisations and extending their useful life for customers; • products can be disassembled into their individual parts cost-effectively for remanufacturing; • components are assessed during product development with regard to their suitability for future reuse as part of a remanufacturing process. For all new luminaire developments, the focus is therefore on high disassembly ease, modularity, and repairability. In the reporting year, these principles were implemented, among other things, in TECTON II. In addition, with its remanufacturing service for TECTON II, PANOS III, and VIVO II, the Zumtobel Group has created one of the first industry-wide offerings that enables the remanufacturing and reuse of luminaires and components in the professio- nal lighting market.

Circular Service Establishment of Circular Systems and new Business Models

The Zumtobel Group develops circular services to preserve the value of products, components, and materials for as long as possible and to reduce the use of primary resources. The focus is on business models that extend the service life of lighting systems, reduce material consumption, and support customers in achieving their sustainability goals. A key element is the Zumtobel Remanufacturing Service. Under this program, existing luminaires are taken back after use, technically inspected, refurbished, and equipped with modern components. In this way, products can be reused, valuable materials and components are kept in the cycle, and CO₂ emissions and resource consumption are reduced at the same time.

The Circular Services of the Zumtobel Group focus on the following value loops:

• Maintenance, Repair & Upgrade to extend product lifespan • Refurbishment to modernize existing lighting systems • Remanufacturing for reconditioning and reuse of products and components
