Welcome to our 15th Annual Bull Sale!
It’s a good time to have anything to sell at this moment with historically low North American cow numbers. These outfits that have withstood the hard times are positioned really well moving forward. Now, like always, maternal, efficient cows that work and last are the best opportunity at a profit. “Pounds pay” sure, but having a set of cows that work for us and not the other way around is our best chance at mitigating the runaway inflationary costs to be in business. Too often I think we do a better job of calculating output than we do inputs. For us, cattle that thrive on grazing low quality, tame grass species and crop residues for a minimum of 300 days out of the year is not only the goal, but the expectation. Cows that do not require attention at calving for any reason, and most importantly love that calf beyond any other instinctual motivation is what we demand. Stacking pedigrees with the best maternal cattle in North America that have been proven to work here in our environment is priority number one. Our program is far less about trying to hit a homerun with a fire and ice mating, and much more about creating consistency that permeates generations. While much of the industry seems to be more concerned about creating the next great sire and dam mating, we aim to take a holistic approach to running a cowherd that is uniform and predictable. The main stream marketing-based genetic supply chain creates a lot of cattle that don’t match the data, or phenotypic outliers that can’t reproduce offspring with those same traits on a consistent enough basis. While I am certainly not disciplined enough to run a true linebreeding program, we are not afraid of overlapping these legacy sires and dams multiple times within 2 or 3 generations. We find this is the most predictable way to achieve cows that last. I know we are all after the same goal of trying to produce cattle that perform at all levels of the production chain. That being said, I think it is really unrealistic to think that there isn’t something being given up in the pursuit of that perfection. The myriad of variables in any given cow calf operation is far greater than the environmental consistency that can be achieved in a feedyard or a packing operation. We believe that while we need to be conscious of feedyard performance and carcass merit, they are certainly significantly lower priorities than creating cows that are long lived and thrive in that environmental uncertainty of a grazing based system. More maternal with more muscle is what our cattle will bring to the table. Cows that will add or maintain weaning weights, keep mature size in check, while increasing fleshing ability. Bulls that will inject shape and dimension, increase breed character and masculinity, while improving feet and udder quality. You will notice that nearly all of our bulls on offer possess breed leading maintenance energy and maternal trait predictors. Aside from infertility, all other guarantees will be made through insurance only. For customers who choose to insure their bulls on sale, York Creek Red Angus will pay 50% of the first year policy premium. An insurance representative will be present at the sale to insure purchases in person and over the phone. There is free bull delivery within 500 miles, and free boarding until April 1. YCRA Foreigner E127 has proven to be without a question the single most influential sire to our program. Not only in the attention his sons have commanded, but more importantly in the daughters entering production and raising the new generation of breeding stock. This offering will be the advent of a dwindling in his direct contributions to the calf crop as we rely just as heavily on natural service breeding as artificial. Following our 2023 sale, Select Sires Argentina purchased the South American semen rights on him, and much of his time is now being spent at bull stud. Phenotypically he has been a standout with the highest adjusted weaning weight of his contemporary group and a balanced, unique look that will elevate some of the fanciest red angus females out there. If you scan our catalogs over the last 10 years, one thing that will be abundantly apparent is that Red SSS Soldier 365W has been a legacy breeding piece in our program, but more importantly, his daughters from those first AI and ET groups are still leading the pack in the cowherd in terms of functionality, fertility, and udder quality.
