Thoughts from the SCTE
Dr Anthony Basham, President For me, the SCTE isn’t just about fibre optics, standards or the latest in broadband tech — it’s about people. It’s where I’ve made some of my closest industry friendships, the kind that go beyond job titles and business cards. One of my mentors was a long-standing SCTE member and he gave so much of himself — his time, his experience, his knowledge — as I found my place in the industry. His generosity really shaped how I see the value of this organisation: a place where people lift each other up. Through SCTE events, meetings and late conversations after lectures, I’ve found a real sense of community — a group of people who not only share my passion for connectivity, but who genuinely support one another. These aren’t just colleagues; they’re friends for life. We do not always agree but that is also the beauty; there is room for opinions and until they are proven they are all valid possibilities. The SCTE has helped me grow professionally, yes — but more than that, it’s connected me with people who’ve inspired and challenged me and reminded me why I love this industry. And in a world of ever-changing tech, those human connections are what truly last.
George Dyckes The SCTE gives me the opportunity to be part of something bigger than just my day to day job. It allows me the chance to give back to the industry and to help drive change. In return for a nominal amount of my time, the Society offers events and experiences in places that I wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to attend.
Peter Sealey I find the SCTE is invaluable: it offers great networking opportunities, thought-provoking presentations and events (the latest of which was the best yet in my view), as well as up-to-date industry news that keeps me well-informed about emerging trends and developments. Plus, I truly enjoy the insights provided by Broadband Journal, which both inform and entertain. As the industry goes through another period of change, the SCTE is changing alongside, keeping me in the loop and engaged.
Chris Swires I have been involved with the SCTE for more than 50 years, and it continues to be an important part of my life. The members I have got to know over the years have become valued friends. To this day, I continue to meet new and interesting people. The SCTE has an important role in educating and elevating the standards of engineering through lectures, training and the opportunity for discussion and the sharing of ideas offered by its membership. I believe that the SCTE will continue to prosper, as over all the years it has been in existence, it has always embraced the latest ideas and adapted to meet with new challenges.
