How My Kids Make Me Proud and Inspire Me Every Day

I

f Mary hadn’t happened to call our youngest son, Mason, one September night, we might not have known about one of the coolest things he’s ever done — but that makes me almost prouder of him. Mason works at an investment bank in New York City, and in late September of this year, he and his team were selected to ring the bell

burned bridges. We’ve trusted people we should not have, and we’ve learned plenty of valuable lessons from that. It would be easy to brush off

to open the stock trading for that day at the NASDAQ. Not knowing that this was happening, Mary called him the night before just to check in, as mothers do. Mason casually brought up what he was doing the next day, but quickly turned the conversation around, downplaying his role and recognizing his team’s efforts in earning that recognition. We were beyond proud of him. This is a cool moment in anyone’s career, but Mason saw no need to brag about what was happening in his life. He used that moment to understand just how lucky and grateful he was for the team he worked with. As a father and as a business owner, I’ve tried to make sure those around me know how extraordinary they are. I want to create an environment like the one Mason is working in, where every team member feels valued and appreciative that they get to work with the people they do. Often Mary and I will take in “kids” as technicians or administrative helpers at our clinic. We help them and give them opportunities, and when the time comes for them to go on to bigger career opportunities, we encourage them to move on. Some have gone on to be teachers, Ph.D. candidates, and members of law enforcement, while others have come back to work with us.

helping others after these experiences, but real perseverance lies in continuing to give other people opportunities rather than letting our desire to help be stifled by those who burned us. We build relationships here at Fyzical Therapy Hand & Balance Centers of El Paso, and we’re not going to let anyone tarnish that. Everyone goes through life putting in hard work and effort, but our success is measured by how we have helped people and how we have changed things for others around us. Both of our sons have been making us proud in the ways they have chosen to live their lives and carry forward the lessons we tried to teach them. My eldest son is in the process of interviewing for various medical schools, and it’s been a competitive, hard-fought road to get there. He’s had a couple of interviews so far, and he keeps plugging away. It’s hard not to be a proud dad when both of your kids work diligently and stay humble while doing so. I think if there was one more lesson I’d like to teach them, it’s that you should always tell your parents before you ring the bell at the NASDAQ.

Enjoy These 6 Autumn Activities

Fun for the Whole Family!

Movie Night Gather your loved ones in

Throughout November, everyone is eagerly looking forward to Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, but you shouldn’t let the rest of the month slip past you! Enjoy these other fall activities with the whole family. Homemade Caramel Apples Homemade treats are no doubt far better than their store-bought counterparts. Try your hand at making your own caramel apples for the whole family to enjoy. You can also add a number of toppings to liven things up, such as nuts, white or milk chocolate, coconut, sprinkles, or pecans. Backyard Bonfire During these cold months, you may be tempted to stay indoors, but heading outside for a bonfire is a great way to spend time with your family while enjoying the brisk weather. If you have a fire pit in your backyard, now is the perfect time to take advantage of it by bundling up with some hot chocolate and s’mores. Autumn Arrangements It’s time to get crafty! Creating your own fall arrangements will ensure that your home has the seasonal decorations you want. Making beautiful fall flower arrangements for your kitchen table or wreaths for your front door to greet guests will create the desired autumn vibe you’ve been searching for.

the living room with popcorn, blankets, and a great film. Make the most of your autumn evenings by cozying up and spending quality time with each other while watching some family holiday favorites, like “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” or the Thanksgiving comedy-drama “Pieces of April.” Home-Cooked Food When autumn rolls around, pie and warm cider may be high on your list of tasty treats you’re eagerly anticipating. This fall, encourage your family to take part in making annual goodies and sharing them with your neighbors. Nothing warms the heart more than receiving a loaf of freshly baked pumpkin bread during these increasingly cold days. Knitted Scarves If you’re handy with knitting needles, now is the season to put them to work. Hand-knitted scarves are great gifts to give throughout the fall and winter, and you can also make it a family activity! Take some time to teach your kids how to knit and crochet to create scarves of their very own. As if his empathy toward his patients and our military patients wasn’t enough, Adam is hoping to one day pursue training for an advanced orthopedic specialty. This specialty requires two more years of schooling and a mentorship program, which Adam is hoping to do with one of our therapists here at Fyzical Therapy Balance & Hand Centers. Adam has also recently taken an interest in helping patients who are struggling with their balance, especially after watching a former patient come back to our clinic for a debilitating balance issue. Adam was impacted by the patient’s outright fear of daily activities and the process of helping them get back to their life. When he isn’t helping our patients return to a sense of normalcy, Adam is spending time in his church and with his wife of one year, Stacey, and their two dogs, Alvus, a miniature schnauzer, and Louise, a terrier mix.

Our Relatable, Motivated Physical Therapist Meet Adam Vargas!

Like many other physical therapists, Adam Vargas was inspired to pursue a career in the field because of his own experience as a patient. An accident left

Vargas with lingering knee and shoulder issues, and to this day, he remembers the frustration he felt with himself and the inability to do what he was once able to do. Thankfully, he had a physical therapist to help him, and Adam returned to his normal, healthy self with a determination to help others. “It’s cool to be able to connect with the patient and, at a certain point, to develop more of a therapeutic relationship,” Adam says. “You understand what they’re going through.” But unlike many other physical therapists, it was also Adam’s naval officer dad who motivated him to pursue a medical career. In the Navy, Adam’s dad worked in health care around the world, and it gave Adam an appreciation for that line of work. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Adam has lived across the globe with his family, and graduated with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2016 from the University of Texas at El Paso.

As one of our most likable and relatable therapists, we could not be happier to have Adam with us. Keep up your great work, Adam!

Avoid Falling Mishaps Learn More About the Causes and Treatment of Falls

What’s not to love about our Texas weather? Unlike our northern friends, our holidays are not spent shoveling, adding layers to our wardrobes, and fighting off winter chills. Instead, it’s a festive time that warms both our hearts and our limbs. While Texas residents may not have to worry about slick ice, everyone is at risk of falling now and then due to varying factors, and the effects of a tumble can last a lifetime. Learn more about the causes of falls and the treatment of injuries that may result from them, and be prepared this winter. Risk Factors Those with diabetes or eating limitations should carefully monitor their food intake to avoid physical weakness. Other chronic conditions, like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, or arthritis, can also put people at a higher risk for collapse. Research shows that your chances of falling increase as you age, but regardless of your age, dehydration, fear of previous falls or injuries, and mood disorders can also contribute to a fall. Immediate and Persistent Injuries This might seem obvious, but when your body falls to the ground, it can hurt. Immediate and obvious injuries can include broken limbs,

concussions, and serious cuts, but pain and other issues can persist long after the bandages come off. After a fall, you should have your whole body evaluated and monitored to ensure no additional issues were triggered. Continue carefully monitoring any injuries even after they heal to make sure there are no long-term impacts. Getting Help

If you are injured in a fall, seek medical help right away. No matter how severe your injuries are, physical therapy can help you get back to functioning at your normal level. Physical therapy exercises are designed to increase your flexibility, mobility, and range of motion after a variety of injuries. Plus, your physical therapist can monitor you in the crucial months after a fall to make sure you’re recovering properly. Don’t get stuck suffering from the effects of a fall during our wonderful Texas winter.
