PEDAL SMART YOUR GUIDE TO SAFE AND ENJOYABLE BIKING
Knee Pain Knee pain is a common overuse injury for bicyclists, often caused by improper bike fit or poor riding technique. Make sure your bike is correctly adjusted to your body. The saddle height and position, as well as the alignment of the pedals, can affect knee stress. Consider consulting a professional for a bike fitting. Also, gradually increase your mileage and intensity to avoid overuse. Achilles Tendinitis Achilles tendon inflammation, also known as Achilles tendinitis, is typically caused by overuse or improper footwear. Be sure to wear cycling shoes that fit well and provide adequate support. Stretch your calf muscles regularly and avoid sudden biking intensity or duration increases. Lower Back Pain Poor posture or an improperly sized bike can potentially lead to lower back pain. While riding your bike, your back should be straight, and your core muscles engaged. Adjust the bike’s handlebar height and reach to ensure a comfortable riding position. Strengthening your core muscles can also help prevent back pain.
As a kid, the moment the training wheels come off and you’re able to hit the pavement on your bike is one of the most freeing and liberating feelings — it’s magic. Biking and getting out in nature is like a ticket to a mini adventure each time, regardless of your destination. The thrill of the wind rushing past your face as you pedal, the sun warming your back, and the many sights and sounds along the way make bike riding one of the most enjoyable experiences. On June 3, we celebrated World Bicycle Day, a fun observance to recognize the joy of biking that takes exercise to a whole new level of excitement. While biking is a great way to stay active and break a sweat, like any physical activity, it comes with the risk of injury. Understanding common bicycle injuries and learning how to avoid them can help ensure your biking adventures are safe and enjoyable. In our newsletter last month, we highlighted some of the best local trails to explore from the saddle of your bike, but this month, let’s explore some of the most frequent injuries bicyclists face and tips to prevent them. Common Bicycle Injuries Road Rash Road rash occurs when the skin scrapes against the pavement, resulting in painful cuts and abrasions. To prevent road rash, wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and cycling shorts made from durable materials. Gloves can also protect your hands in case of a fall. Head Injuries Do you always wear a helmet? Head injuries, including concussions, are serious and can have long-term effects. Wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head each time you get on your bike. Helmets can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injury during a fall or collision.

When you’re injured on the job, your first thought is likely workers’ compensation and whether or not you qualify. But how exactly does it work, and what do you need to know? What is workers’ compensation? Workers’ compensation is a system designed to provide financial assistance and medical benefits to employees who suffer work- related injuries or illnesses. It ensures that injured workers receive the necessary support without the need to prove fault or negligence by the employer. Employers are required to carry workers’ compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs for employees who are injured or become sick due to their jobs. This system serves a dual purpose — it provides benefits to injured workers and protects employers from potential lawsuits arising from workplace injuries. Workers’ Compensation Benefits Medical Coverage This includes all reasonable and necessary medical treatment related to the injury or illness, such as doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, medications, and physical therapy. YOUR GUIDE TO FRUGAL GROCERY SHOPPING Eating Well on a Budget
Are you tired of spending more money on fewer ingredients? You are not alone. While prices for most consumer goods have increased, food costs have
increased even more. Grocery prices have increased by 25% since 2020, outpacing inflation by 6%. By buying food that costs less, lasts longer, and
feeds more people, you can keep your grocery bills manageable while still eating well. Look for these foods at the grocery store to keep your wallet and pantry full! Ground Meat
Whether it’s chicken, beef, turkey, or pork, ground meat is cheap and usable in many recipes. In addition to a range of options to meet dietary restrictions and preferences, ground meat is sold in larger quantities and costs less than many other forms of meat. Despite not being a “prime cut” option, ground meat is still full of protein that satisfies your hunger. Peanut Butter While everyone loves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, this inexpensive ingredient can also be used in a number of other recipes. It can be used as a delicious protein additive to smoothies or spread on celery to make ants on a log. Tortillas Tortillas come in two main varieties: corn and flour. The former is more traditional and less expensive, but if you prefer flour, it’s still an economical option. While you can buy pre-cooked tortillas, the flavor is much better when you cook them yourself. If you buy in bulk, you can save the tortillas you aren’t ready to use by freezing them, allowing you to save more and only use what you need. Tortillas are also used by astronauts as a substitute for bread since they don’t leave crumbs when you eat them. If they are good enough for astronauts, they’re good enough for us!

On Dec. 15, 2023, pet owner Chanell Bell of Philadelphia was taken aback when she noticed that Kobe, her 4-year-old miniature Alaskan husky, had dug a hole in her home’s front yard. This was a stark departure from Kobe’s usual behavior, which Bell initially dismissed as boredom and promptly refilled the hole. However, when Kobe began to dig again in the same spot, Chanell realized something was amiss. Hero Husky Saves the Neighborhood

She investigated further, reviewing footage from the family home’s security camera overlooking Kobe’s newfound digspot. Then, she witnessed Kobe sniff the air around the area before digging the hole in the same spot again.
Thinking something Kobe smelled must have alarmed him, Bell phoned Philadelphia Gas Works, which sent a crew out to investigate. The engineers discovered that the gas lines beneath the Bell household were old, dilapidated, and beginning

to leak. After fixing the issue, the company told Bell that if Kobe
had not discovered the leak, the line would have posed significant health and safety concerns for the whole neighborhood. “They told me something as simple as a light switch turning on could’ve caused an explosion,” Bell told USA Today. After Bell shared Kobe’s story on social media, it caught the attention of PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, who awarded the young husky the Heroic Dog Award. Inspired by Kobe’s efforts, Bell wrote a children’s book dedicated to him called “The Dog That Saved the Block Before Christmas.”

Celebrating a Dad’s Love
Published by Newsletter Pro • www.NewsletterPro.com
Let’s Hear It for Our Dads! THIS MONTH, WE CELEBRATE YOU
Happy Father’s Day, everyone! Father’s Day weekend is all about Dad. It’s a time to celebrate all the fathers and father figures out there — a role that continually surprises, challenges, and rewards. I’m the lucky dad of two amazing twins who keep me on my toes and never fail to remind me of how rewarding and fun life can be. From the moment they arrived, doubling the love (and the diapers), they’ve taught me about life’s greatest joys. Fatherhood is a grand adventure, and every stage is unique. When they were babies, it was all about the midnight feedings. Their first steps are memories that power me through the tougher days. As they grew into toddlers, my world was filled with crayon drawings, backyard playtime, and the constant buzz of whys and hows. Who knew such little people could have such big questions?
As they ventured into their school years, I became a homework helper and, now, as teens, their biggest fan and supporter of all endeavors. Every stage of their lives has brought new joys and challenges, and there’s nothing better than watching them grow into their personalities.
Through it all, the purpose of being a dad is the same: to love, teach, and, most importantly, learn from these remarkable little humans who manage to change our worlds and brighten our days.
Here’s to all the dads who treasure the late-night talks, celebrate the small victories, and embrace the chaos. Here’s to the dads who have mastered the art of patience as their kids test limits and the art of wisdom when they see them make mistakes. Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads out there. Enjoy your day — you deserve it!
