COMMUNITY SERVICE Based on the concept of Tikkun Olam, "repairing our world," students participate in acts of tzedakah and gemilut hasadim (social action). When one goes beyond the obligation of mitzvah, we not only help others, but we also benefit from the good feelings we get. Community service and the practice of mitzvot are woven into every curriculum, starting in Early Childhood. Lower School: Tikkun Olam Beck Lower School students do not have individual community service requirements and as a class will determine a project to fulfill the mitzvah of Tikkun Olam. Room parents will coordinate this project with the classroom/homeroom teachers. Middle School: Tikkun Olam Middle School students are required to perform a minimum of 10 hours of community service each year. Students must turn in a minimum of 5 completed hours at the end of the first trimester and another 5 at the completion of the second trimester. - Additional hours are recognized at the Middle School Awards Assembly. - Students choose their own service projects and, in the past, have collected food, books, toys, bicycles, cell phones, diapers, blankets and clothes for those in need. - Students will complete a form to receive credit for their service hours. B'nai Mitzvah Program A B'nai Mitzvah Philanthropic Program allows Levine Academy students entering the Bar/Bat Mitzvah years to contribute voluntarily to a special fund established by their class. Instead of students giving gifts to each other in honor of their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, they join forces in sharing with those less fortunate by giving to a philanthropic fund. This has become a tradition at Levine Academy, inviting students to participate personally in tikkun olam , realizing the Jewish responsibility and obligation of tzedakah , bonding with each other, and learning about the real-life process of planning and allocation. Students are required to arrive at school properly attired. Clothing should be clean, neat, and well fitting. The uniform is expected to be in good repair with no writing or tears. All boys are required to arrive at school with a legitimate kippah. Students are expected to have a neat, orderly appearance. Hair color must be a naturally occurring color, no extreme colors. Levine Academy reserves the right to determine if hairstyle, length, and color are appropriate. Dress Uniform* Dress Uniforms are required on specified Dress Uniform days. All “Dress Uniform” shirts require the embroidered Levine Academy logo (Black logo polo for Kindergarten through Seventh Grade and Blue logo polo for Eighth Grade only). If sweatshirts, fleece jackets, vests, and sweaters are worn within the school as part of the Dress Uniform, items must be approved outerwear. Dress Uniform is required on: - Erev Shabbat (Friday, except when it is a designated Kehilla Kedosha Shabbat) - Field trips - Grandparent’s Day - Student Orientation days - The first day of school, and any other days deemed appropriate by the Administration. Regular Uniform* Kindergarten through Eighth Grade’s daily uniform can consist of black logo polo, white logo polo, or blue logo polo (Eighth Grade only) with khaki bottom or plaid skirt/skort, or plaid jumper with any of the approved polos stated above. The regular uniform is worn Monday-Thursday. Kindergarteners are DRESS CODE: Uniform Policy 2020-2021 Kindergarten – Eighth Grade
