Big Wheels and Happy Meals for charity

The day before the Big Bike’s arrival it was McHappy Day and McDonald’s outlets all across Canada collected the proceeds from the sale of every McCafé cup of coffee, Big Mac burger, and McHappy Meal for kids sold between local children’s aid charities and the Ronald McDonald House project. In Rockland OPP officers and local firefighters like station Captain Jake Sopiro (right) and Shanon Desormeaux took their turns behind the counter to serve up customers with help and advice from McDonald’s staff Sylvie Parisien (left), manager Rhianne Seville, and Crystal Grzella.

Jean-François Lozier, curator of the Canadian History Before 1800 exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, expressed delight at the city’s plan to commemorate the anniversary of Champlain’s journey up the Ottawa River. “Among the historical figures from the early days of Canadian history, Samuel de Champlain was at once an experienced navigator, a gifted cartographer, and an ambitious man,” Lozier stated. “The memory of his voyage along the Ottawa River in 1613, at the end of which he left us the first descriptions of what would later become the National Capital Region, is worthy of being perpetuated and celebrated.” Blais’ proposal, which had the support of Mayor Jim Watson, includes educational, civic, and tourism components. Several community groups have also now stepped forward to announce plans for various local events to help commemorate Champlain’s anniversary next year.

The Clarence-Rockland Recreational Trail Advisory Committee would like to present and discuss the proposed recreational trailcircuitwith themunicipality’s citizens.

Next year marks the 400 th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s journey up the Ottawa River to what later became the site for the nation’s capital. Plans are underway now to make sure that event receives a proper blow-out celebration. Cumberland Ward Coun. Stephen Blais championed a proposal for a commemoration plan in honour of the “Father of New France” to the city’s finance andeconomicdevelopmentcommittee.That plan received approval during a recent committee session. “As residents of the nation’s capital, we are immensely proud of Samuel de Champlain’s contribution to our national and local history,” stated Blais in a news release. “By recognizing and celebrating Champlain’s historic voyage, this will have significant educational, tourism, and economic potential for Ottawa.” In the summer of 1613 Champlain ventredwest from the site of the colony that later became Québec City.
