Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 2018

Open Air Evangelism Open Air Evangelism. Three days of being outside of your comfort zone. You’re being guided through the boroughs of NYC. You’re not sleeping in your bed. You’re with people you may not know. You’re being told to confront the lost with their eternity. You’re asked to share the gospel with strangers. Many of us would rather take Larry Moyer’s exam after Personal Evangelism class than all of that. Some simply didn’t talk to anyone the whole three days. Others have been blessed with the gift of evangelism. The majority? We’re worried about being far more uncomfortable than we already are. These “somewhat” challenging days in NYC show us where we think our REAL strength is found. We may be confronting the lost, but we’re also being confronted with our own warped desires. Sam Frey once said that we need to get over ourselves. We aren’t the starring role. God and God alone receives the ultimate glory. Yet, we fear rejection. We’d rather not tell people that their lives could change for eternity. We don’t want to deal with looking like “that Christian” or to be faced with challenging questions, like “Does God ‘hate’ gay people?” So often we find our security in how comfortable we are. OAE is a beautiful opportunity to see how much mightier the Lord is than we will ever be. Stand in awe and be humbled. We have the chance to practice something essential to our walk as people following Jesus: giving an account of who He is and what He has done. Yes, it is awkward. We cannot ignore that fact. But that moment of sincerity with someone could impact them forever! We have been given such an expensive gift, and we have been told to share it. There is PLENTY to go around. OAE is an opportunity to practice planting seeds and remember He is the One who gives the increase. The Lord is the One who gives salvation; He alone is mighty to save. I ask you, have you left OAE on the streets of NYC, or have you developed a missionary mindset in your daily life? Will you continue to share, or will you sit on the message of salvation?
