(Part Two)

I f the laws concerning the tithe in the Pentateuch be summarized, the following facts will emerge. Leviti cus 27:30-33 teaches that there was to be a tithe of the seed of the land (cp. Deut. 14:22,23 ; 2 Chron. 31:5, 6). With the herds and flocks every tenth one counted belonged to the L o rd (Jer. 33:13; Ezek. 20:37). Tithes of herds and flocks could not be redeemed with money, but tithes of the produce of the land could be, if a fifth of the value of the tithe was added. Numbers 18:21-32 shows that I the tithe was to be paid to the Lé vites. They were in turn to give a tithe of the tithe to the priests. (Neh. 10:39.) The relation of the Levite to the priest was the same as that be tween the Levite and the rest of Is rael. The book of Deuteronomy (12:5, 6, 11, 18) indicates that the tithe was to be brought to the sanctuary cho sen by God. Verses 7,12,18 reveal that the tithe was to be used for a festal meal by the offerer, his house hold and the Levite. Deuteronomy 14:22-29 states that, if the way to the sanctuary is long, then exchange of the tithe into mon ey was allowed. At Jerusalem the money could be spent as the tither chose, with the owner’s household and the Levite eating a sacrificial meal together. In the third year this tithe could be kept at home and used by the Levite and the poor. Deuteron omy 26:12-15 legislates that in the third year, after the feast has been provided as just described, the owner was to go up to Jerusalem to ask for God’s blessing. If we ask the relevance of this to the Christian life, the words of Grif- fith-Thomas are in point: “ If the principle of tithing was thus previous to the Mosaic economy there seems

no reason to deny its essential fitness today in the economy of grace; the tenth being regarded as God’s abso lute right before any question arises about free-will offerings and other spontaneous gifts of the redeemed and grateful life.” It is ridiculous to think that the godly Israelite stopped at the tithe; there were other offer ings to be brought to the Lord. Today if a young Christian wants to dis cern his obligation before the Lord in the matter of giving, let him begin with the tithe and then give in addi tion to it. It has been found that those who leave the matter in a rath er nebulous state do not always give the minimum of a tithe. An analogous case to the tithe can be found in the matter of murder. Because man is made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26,27) it has always been morally wrong to kill. It was wrong in the age of conscience (Gen. 4:10-15), and was to be visited with capital punishment in the age of human government (Gen. 9:6). Un der the age of law, murder was both morally wrong and had the added character of transgression of the re vealed law of God (Exod. 20:13; 21: 12; Rom. 5:20). In the present age of grace it is morally wrong to mur der and violates the Christian law of love (1 John 3:15; Rom. 13:9,10). Similarly, the tithe was practiced un der the age of promise with the ap proval of God, as we have seen; later it was incorporated as a part of the law system to show man’s utter help lessness before God and to bring him to God by faith (Gal. 3:24). In the present age of grace, without any legalistic compulsions in the matter, the believer may begin his propor tionate giving (1 Cor. 16:2) with the tithe. But let us go on! END.
